DIY: Roof Rack Delete (w/ pics)

Can anyone confirm whether or not the 14+ Trails have the brackets already installed like the 11-13 Trails?

I have a 15 trail and there were no brackets already installed. I had to use and install the brackets that came with my kit. Hope I'm not misunderstanding your question.

Anyone done this to a 2019 TRD PRO rack? I need to remove mine to fit into a hotel garage. But I also want to fit an aftermarket full rack later on.

From stock to no rack you will see no significant change.

Thinking of doing this to my SR5 that sees a lot of highway mileage. Looks awesome, but seems strange to me that no mileage increase with less drag on the roof. Nobody noticed improved MPG? interesting

great write up OP. Just ordered a kit from amazon. Snow removal from the roof with the cross bars stinks.
Figured I'll remove the whole thing and see how many times I'll need it. Got a hitch cargo tray and a trailer.

I did the OEM roof rack delete on my previous Limited as it was black and the silver RR always looked out of place.

Now have a 19 Bliz White Limited Nightshade and the RR is blacked out!!!
FTW well so I thought so until I seen the TRD pro tubular roof rack...


I want that roof rack now :cry2:

I tried doing this today and got scared a couple of bolts in that it was stripping the threads. Its much harder on the Pro as the bolts are torx 40 whereas as on the other models racks the bolts are standard socket heads.

The effort to remove them was too much, too much torque required actually broke one bit. Some came out easier, some would get so hard partially threaded out that something seemed off. Still like to remove the ugly things of my '19 pro. Must be loctitie on these bolts for the pro rack. I did this on my '18 landcruiser and it was a piece of cake.

Any ideas?

my '10 Trail had torx bolts with blue loctite... nothing unusual there. however, given that the Pro parts are added at port it’s possible that whomever installed that ungodly roof rack cross-threaded the bolts for you.

us a longer driver or ratchet will give you more impact hopefully it was not cross threaded with a power tool at the dock ,the factory say 14lb torque only good luck and if you decide to sell the Rack let me know thanks

I was using a 1/2 Long crasftsmsn ratchet. Not a torque wrench but definitely in there tighter than 14 pounds
If I get it off I will not be selling it as I’ll need it when I go to sell the truck

Question

When looking at the mounting points, is the only point of leaking at the bolt holes around and inside of the white plastic housings? Just curious if anywhere else needs to be sealed. I really don't want to be worried about water getting in anywhere.

Thanks for the writeup,debating on just deleting the roof rack or painting the rails black.
