Do I need new shocks?

I have a 08 4Runner with almost 110,000 miles. I've had it since around 90,000. It has xreas. Lately it has been riding kind of like a golf cart on bumpy roads. It still handles good in turns and doesn't noticabley dive during braking. It feels like it is in the right rear but I don't know. I don't care to keep xreas if I change shocks. And it isn't really a trail rig. My local mechanic said he couldn't see anything wrong and it didn't ride horrible but wasn't the best either. Thoughts?

Think Twice

I have never been on the golf cart, but know what bumpy roads are. If you feel that the ride is different than before and it's getting worst, take your car to an auto shop that has licensed mechanic(s). Bad shock, if not fixed in time, could become a road safety hazard and nothing should be compromised over safety.

There are handful of info on the web on how to determine if your shocks are bad and need replacement. Here is one of the

About the XREAS, I regretted that I removed and replaced mine with Bilstein. While such shocks are working for others, they are not for everybody. It bounced so much for me while I was towing the boat. Even a regular daily driving. I was going to replace it @ $300 for each side.

That said, think twice before you ...yank that system

Cheers

thanks for the response! i had heard that some people regret ditching the sysstem. I had bilsteins in my 07 tacoma and didint really have any complaints. I am also thinking about just putting new OEMish shocks. I really want it to ride like a cadi and still be capable but i dont know if you can have both options at the same time.

See, this is one of the reasons I don't want to get rid of my XREAS. I don't want to give up the "Comfortable" ride.

I'm pretty damned happy with my Bilstein 5100's. When I had decided to remove XREAS and replace the entire suspension system, I installed 5100's on the front and 5150's in the back (nobody had 5100's available at the time). The ride in the rear of my Runner was HORRIFIC! The 5150's made the rear end bounce up so high, that it was scary on the freeway. Finally got 5100's installed in the rear and was night and day different! Anyway, bottom line is yes, the Bilsteins and aftermarket springs will not corner like XREAS, HOWEVER, it handles rough roads/terrain like a BOSS! Cornering is still good, but not so "sports-car-ish". Bottom line is, XREAS is very expensive to repair.

Does any shock/spring system handle (on-road) like XREAS?
