Do I need to add LSD additive to transfer case fluid? Limited model with Torsen LSD.

Hello,

Can I use Royal Purple Synchromax in my transfer case/center differential for a 2011 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4wd? I have heard of others using Synchromax for transfer case fluid change (it's listed as a direct Toyota LF transfer case fluid replacement).

The 4Runner 4wd Limited has a Torsen Limited Slip Differential (unlike the SR5 or other models which do not).

Will I need to add a LSD additive with the Synchromax to my Torsen Center Differential?
I've read this is not necessary because the 4runner Torsen is not clutch type. But I've heard conflicting opinions...

You are right that the Torsen differential is not a clutch type, rather it is all gears -- really weird gears! Torsen - Wikipedia

Most cars that use them, most notably Audi, have them built into the transmission and they are lubricated by the lighter weight transmission fluid, not the heavier gear oil common in 4X4 transfer cases. I have a VW Passat 4Motion (AWD) with a Torsen differential in it. Thus, you should look in your owners manual for the lubrication recommendations for the 4Runner with the Torsen differential.

The owners manual for my 2018 4Runner makes no differentiation on oil requirements for the SR5, Limited, or TRD Off Road -- they all take the same oil.
