Do some '05 trim levels have bigger brakes than others?

I heard...may have read it here somewhere...that 4Runner Sport's have bigger brakes.

On a related note it looks like the V8 requires 17" wheels whether it's an Sr5, Sport, or Limited so maybe it's a V6 vs. V8 thing.

Can anyone confirm?

Sport Runners have slightly larger front brake rotors.

This may have been true on the '04. As for the '05...Sport and Limited models have the same rotors. I'm not sure about the SR5 as I didnt' check.

Always true for sport (bigger front brakes) in both '05 and '04. Interesting to note, unless I have a misconfigured 4Runner, adding the 17" wheels as a factory option (that's the way it came from the factory), also included the bigger brakes. A friend who has a lift asked me when I changed the front rotors, he had seen a couple of other SR5's and the front and rear rotors were the same. I said I didn't. He said the front rotors are just over 3/4" bigger than the rears. Same dimensions as the sport brakes... Maybe that $100 option also includes bigger brakes or I just got lucky in a misconfiguration...

I have the '04 SR5 V-8 4x4. Mine came stock with the 17" rims and the larger brakes.

If you have the bigger brakes you cannot go down to a 16" rim later - which can be an issue since there is a bit less choice in tires to fit the 17" rim size.

This issue is as clear as mud.....

(1)It only applies to the front brakes and the rotor size for the bigger brakes are 13.3" and the smaller 12.6". In reality it means that the bigger brakes can only get 17" wheels unless you grind the calipers down like some folks in Aus did. Smaller brakes can take both 16 and 17" wheels. Rear discs are 12.3".

(2)As far as I know Sports had the bigger brakes for all years (03+).

(3)03 Limiteds got the smaller brakes.

(4)04+ Limiteds got the bigger brakes (can be wrong on this one)

(5)All SR5s have the smaller brakes irrrespective of wheel offered. Maybe the SR5 05s had bigger brakes on the V8s ???

(6)The problem is most people wont know the difference till they try to get 16" wheels on it, that is why the data is so muddy.

I do know the top 3 statements are correct. But the others are still iffy. ANybody else with more hard data on this??

All Sports definitely had the bigger brakes because my fairly early production 2003 has the bigger rotors.

I thought the bigger brakes were only on the Sports regardless of what year 4Runner you have. I don't think any year Limited has the bigger brakes because isn't that part of the "sport package" on the Sport Edition?

Also, I don't think the brake size has anything to do with engine size. It only has to do with the trim.

Mark if you can measure the 05 LTD brakes it might help. I think they will the same as yours. At least it is close by and will provide another data point.

You were right. I just measured the brakes on both trucks and they were the same size. They both were around 13.2''.

I didn't have a chance to pull my front wheel and it's hard to measure accurately with the wheel on. I would say that my front and rear look more similar than dissimilar. So I must have 12.6" fronts. The caliper doesn't look overly close to the rim either...as if reducing the radius .5" would not cause clearance issues.

What is the laundry list of parts that are different between the 12.6" and the 13" set-ups? Is the caliper the same? Is it just a caliper adapter and a larger rotor?

I am very interested in ending up with the larger set up because I will be doing a fair amount of towing. The Car and Driver article doesn't mention it either and they are pretty tuned into performance related upgrades like that.

Nowhere in the literature does it mention bigger brakes on the Sport or Limited.

Just to reiterate, I have a V8 SR5 with only the 17" wheel, roof rail, and third row option package. I HAD to find a V8 without sunroof.

Does anyone have access to a parts manual which could definitively identify which rotors come on which trim levels?

Let me say again... For the '05, I compared the Limited and Sport Ed. brakes side by side. They are identical.

One of the problems is that Toyota used the bigger front rotors as a selling point for the Sports Edition. No where in the literature does it state that either the SR5 or the Limited come with the larger front rotors, nor does it ever state that it is an option for these models. Yet after measuring mine on a lift over the weekend, I have 13.3" rotors up front, and mine is an SR5 V6.

Note: Mine is an '04, and the sales brochure does state that the SE has larger front rotors.

On Toyota's website there is no call out for larger rotors on any one trim level or engine size. I also don't recall it in the '05 brochure.

I found a parts site that had a pretty good parts algorithm and for '05 rotors the only point of differentiation is V6 or V8. The V8 rotors were about $10 more.

I guess I need to measure mine for real next time.

When I bought my 05 several months ago I didn't find any 05 SR5s around the country without the 17" wheel option. The lowest base vehicle was a 2wd SR5 optioned with 17" wheels, roof rack, and mats. Maybe a brake change was made for SR5. Any see a 16" wheel MY05 SR5 around?
