do the 3rd gens have built in amps?

i was online at a sight and they mentioned that the 3rd gens have a built in amp they said it was located behind the ashtray. Now i have a 97 t4r sr5 and i didnt see any amp behind my ashtray, would just the limited models have them? thanks to anyone that can give any info

My 98 LTD had it , it's VERY small . But it's obvious it's an audio amp .

It's behind the factory radio. Has a bracket on each side.

did a previous owner pull it out you think? I thought all of them had one.

i dont know i looked but couldnt find one and TheDurk said his 99 sr5 didnt have one and mine is a 97 sr5 so i prob dont have one either. all i know is that there is a small box in that general area but its for the antenna i think cause it says "antenna" on it.

oh another thing i just installed an old radio deck i had it was from wal mart for 50 bcks so i know its not good but ya it sounds really crappy is it the speakers distorting or is it the head unit, if yours sounds good and you have stock speakers then i know its the head unit

My 2000 4Runner had a stock amp in it. Made it a little confusing when installing the new deck.

I am the previous (and only) owner. Pulled the stock HU for a high end Alpine CD player by the end of the first month and put the original cassette deck in a beater in Brazil. I'd remember if there was a separate amp. There were 4 HU's for the '99 4Runner according to my Owner's manual. Simplest (mine) was a cassete deck/radio with a built-in power-amp. This is confirmed by my '99 FSM which has troubleshooting diagnostic for the tapedeck with buit-in power amp as well as the units with separate amps (pp. BE-124-125). I stand by my statement.
