Do you ever get bored with your T4R?

I have had my Runner since February. I have done some basic mods, like:

Painting the emblems to match the paint
Tint
RSG Sliders
2010-2013 TE Roof Rack
Bilsteins
Yellow Fogs

I don't know what the deal is, but I have gotten bored with it. I don't want to deviate too much from stock, in case I end up trading it in.

I haven't found anything that I HAVE to have, but I am always tinkering around on AutoTrader, CarGurus, Craigslist, etc. looking for something.

Before I bought my Runner, I owned:

2005 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71
2006 Chevrolet Tahoe
2014 Ford F150 Lariat 5.0
2013 Honda CRZ (was a commuter car lol)
2010 Toyota Tundra Crew Max

So, I have always been a Full Sized SUV/Truck guy. All my vehicles were modded, and such.

I guess I wrote all that to ask this.. does anyone else ever get bored or complacent with their Runner? Constantly looking for the next rig?

Or are most of you die hard 4Runner guys that are only looking at 4Runners to replace your current 4runner? lol

To be truthful sometimes I wish I brought the new Jeep Wrangler, then I remembered why I brought my 4runner ( interior space, reliable and build quality)

If you don't look back at it every time you get out of it... then it ain't the right vehicle for you. I just got my t4r in January and am far from bored with it. So many things I want to continue to do to the overall build. Are you actually taking your vehicle on trials, camping, offroading, etc... or is it just your everyday driver to and from work on pavement and that's it?

Out of all your previous vehicles posted, is it your favorite so far or do you think you'd rather have a full size truck? That is the only thing I sometimes question... Is would I be happier with a truck? The overall answer for me is no... but everyone is different. :shrug:

Oh I look back at it, lol!

I have taken it on a few trails and fire roads, but not anything crazy. It is still pretty new, so I don't feel like beating it up.. yet! I do drive it to and from the office, on road trips, etc. It is a pavement princess for the most part, with the functionality to be able to go where it needs to go.

I don't really have a NEED for a truck, but I have had one for most my life. I still have a 97 Sierra that is a "go to Lowes/Home Depot" truck, used to transport stuff that won't fit in the Runner.

I don't know.. I just always get a bug to get something different.. but usually I am barely break even on payoff/trade value. On the Runner, I am positive $7k right now, so it is even more intriguing.
 
OP, looks like you get a new car about every 2 years.........that should tell you something right there.


I don't get bored per say but I do go through spells (towards the end of one right now) where I don't do much to it yet have accumulated plenty of parts to add. That's more due to competing priorities (house, job, etc)

This is pretty much me as well. I’ve always been a full size truck and Jeep (old school style) kinda guy, but have always admired Toyota. This is my first 4Runner and honestly, i often feel like, “this isn’t really a very exciting truck”. But, it’s got an incredible reputation, gets me anywhere I want to go in comfort, wheels like a mofo and hauls all my stuff at the same time. I think that I actually use this truck the way I intended to and That’s really why I bought it. I don’t think anything out there touches it with all of that.

I still test drive stuff from time to time, but I usually end up walking back to my runner being glad that I have it. If your not really going to do anything to it, or use it where it’s made to be used, then I would see why you’d get bored with it. Sell it and get a ZR2.

That is correct.

I usually trade it in when I get to even equity. I do too much driving to get positive equity, usually. Got lucky with this one, as I had a paid off Tundra I traded in. That $11k gave me a good chunk of positive equity.
 
I didn’t paint the emblems to match the paint and not bored at all. But then again I never modified my DeWalt 20V Drill and not bored of that either so maybe I’m not the right guy to ask.

Sounds like you're just a victim of the consumer culture. Break away and be free. You've had the thing for 3 months. The car industry loves guys like you.

If I'm doing the math right, this is at a minimum your 6th car in 13 years. If you got more than three years out of your 4R I'd be amazed.

My 4R is the third vehicle I've owned in 17 years; the previous two gave me 7 and 8 years service each, and I traded them in out of necessity.

Not to say that one is better than the other, but why would you expect to not be looking for the next car you're going to own?

I will put myself here on the “new” car every few years.

First truck was 2 years, second was 5 years. It since then I’ve been changing every year or 2. My last truck I had for 1 year, brand new GMC Canyon which I did like but had my son and his car seat didn’t fit in the back well at all (we didn’t know we were having a baby when I got the truck).

I typically find things I dislike about a vehicle but with my 4Runner my biggest complaint.... the rear window switch doesn’t light up at night.... really though that’s it..

This is a vehicle I know I’ll have for years to come, it’s a great platform to modify from.

Take it off-road on some real trails.

This is what I was thinking. I do love my new 4runner and my wife wishes I would get bored with it (and quit buying stuff) but what I really am dreaming about is getting to do things in NM, CO, UT, NV, CA, and OR this summer that our past vehicles couldn't. Making memories with my wife and son in the mountains are things I will always remember. The 4runner has the mix of offroad capability, cargo space, passenger space, carrying capacity (roof/hitch), ride height, etc. that I could find in no other vehicle so it was the right tool for the job for me.
 
You want to hear something corny? The reason you are feeling the way you are with your 4Runner is due to the fact you haven't yet established a relationship built on trust. Once you get enough solo trips under your belt to remote locations and the 4Runner never leaves you stranded and performs well, you will start to appreciate your rig more and you will stopping looking for that next hot truck.

I do agree that if you just plain don't like the 4Runner it's fine to get rid of it for something else, as life is too short to drive something you do not enjoy. Just remember, nothing is perfect.

Every car has its pros and cons. I won't lie I've looked at other cars too while owning my 4Runner, the Tacoma and Tundra. Sometimes I think the utility of a truck would suit my needs better but right now have held off. After testing driving both I think I'll wait til the next generation Tundra comes out and see if and what a 6th gen 4Runner brings. My guess based on your buying history that you're always chasing that proverbial rainbow. If you're financially able to do so then go for it. For me, I listen to some Dave Ramsey and Suze Orman and that usually keeps me in check from making a dumb buying decision.
 
1975 FJ40: 1975-1984
1984 4Runner: 1984-2016
2016 4Runner: 2016-until I can't drive.

Not bored yet...gues it could happen.
 
My T4R is my daily/main family can and i still love it after 2 years and minimal mods. Finally gave it a lift last weekend. I do have a weekend/fun to get a change in venue, but the T4R is getting all the attention lately.
