Do you like running boards.....

I've never liked them, but after two years of above average rain - and it was rainy here to start with - I think of them as big mud flaps.

I don't do rocks too often, and they don't get in the way on the beach.

They are. I find them useful, though I understand the aesthetic concerns.

I didn't read through the replies, so this may be repetitive. I'm in the camp that not everybody needs sliders. An running boards provide several functional benefits. A step to wash roof of the truck. A step for dogs, kids, wife, grandmother. Reduces wear on the seats if used to lift out of the seat instead of sliding off the seat. Sometimes blocks rocks thrown from front tires instead of hitting your paint. And for the money the '10-'13 trail style running boards look great and pretty seamless, next best thing to nothing or sliders. Don't hesitate unless you have a functional need for sliders. My new-to-me Trail will likely never see a situation where sliders are needed. If it does, the Amp retractable running boards I intend to put on will be destroyed My 4Runner isn't going to be a pavement queen, but it probably won't go much further than forest service roads and the occasional ranch/logging road. I have the Amps on my slightly lifted Dodge 2500 4x4, and they are the schizz.

No offense, but nerf bars and bull bars are the two most worthless/pointless mods you can do to a vehicle...and have the propensity to do significantly more harm than good. The first rock you hit off road, say goodbye to nerf bars...first tree or obstacle you encounter up front, pushes those bull bars right back to your front end.

I've been debating nerf bars on my '16 limited. Both my OEM running boards have massive dents in them. I've thought about just taking them off, but I lead a double life ... on weekends I'm plowing up fire roads with my buddies, but on weekdays I'm going to work in a suit and tie. The running boards are nice in dress shoes, but they're starting to look like shit. I worry about nerf bars because they do seem flimsy and likely to rust quickly. Are there any good alternatives?

4runr4eva, don't get offended. Everyone entitled to their opinion here. It is one of the Forum's perks. Once post is here you might get support or the opposite but ultimately it is up to you how you mod your truck and how you use it. Don't let things get to you. Even though Yellow Snow might be right in regards of serious off road usage he might not realize your priorities do not include that kind of off roading. I like how you have the exhaust outlets done. Nice Ride

SR5? Sliders for an SR5 is probably overkill but that's what I would do instead of the cheap running boards that the first rock you hit will bend them. Much more expensive though. Get the flat or 5 degree sliders so they will double as a step.



I would personally put nothing on an SR5 as opposed to running boards. I like the looks better. But if the wife aint happy nobody is happy, so that may be your biggest concern. eace:

I'm just echoing what has already been said, but I personally find mine to be a pain in the a$$. The truck isn't tall enough for me to need them, so they've become this filthy thing that I have to jump over if I want to exit without dirt all over the back of my pants. But, I routinely have short passengers that DO need them, so I've learned to adjust.

I just bought a new 2020 TRD ORP without the running boards.
Now I'm thinking I want them, not for ease of getting in/out of the truck, but for minor protection at the mall parking lots from idiots in sedans who just kick their doors wide open without any considerations to others.

I really like the way it looks without the boards, but think I need the widest possible. 6" perhaps. Or flat oval 5" tubular nurfs?

Any recommendations?

I love my tube steps that came with mine. keeps the door dings down too. People hit the tube instead of my paint. I'm about to put a lift on and it will come in handy. I do not rick climb. That is what the honda rancher is for.

Rock rails with steps welded to them (not my favorite since those typically can't be the upcanted ones) or rock rails with skateboard tape on them can double as running boards if you have someone short to consider.

I feel your pain. That's why I had a dealer to drop the price in hope to get decent set of boards for half of what they show on the window sticker for them.
But there're so many options. I'm lost. I guess I'd want the widest ones. But like to look of the tubular nerfs.

My SR5 came (used) from the Toyota dealer with Nfab nerf/steps.
But I will be replacing them with sliders because I do occasionally leave the mall (we don't have a mall where I live).
Very few of our "roads" are paved, 4wd is almost a must have for some. Then there are trails through the desert mountains.

IMO, the Ford Raptor style running boards are the best style for form and function.

The closest I have seen for the 4Runner is the RCI rock sliders.
