In midtown Manhattan, Cabbies rarely ever use them.

NYC cabbies are the most consistent honkers, imho. They love to honk the millisecond the light turns green. They hypocritically honk when another cab does what all cabs do, which is NOT pulling over as far as they are able to drop off passengers but instead do the lazy sort-of-pull over which blocks traffic behind them.
oh yeah, to answer the question I toot toot when light turns green and driver ahead of me doesn't move, usually because he or she is texting. About 1/3 of the time the driver takes personal offense to this vehicular tap on the shoulder and gives me the finger, but I kind of enjoy the overt display of misplaced anger. A bit of theatrical drama and variety gives the day texture. Hopefully he/she is texting now bc he/she has been waiting for a safe opportunity.
I rarely use my horn in anger. Why give them the satisfaction of a reaction?
I will warn off another driver who is drifting into my lane or is changing lanes and is clearly unaware of me.
For the split second scenarios I am focussed on avoidance so there so there is no time to honk.

I use my Hella SuperTones occasionally.

I'm actually quite impressed with the horn volume on my CT-200h, IMO sounds way louder than even the Hella SuperTones

I hardly ever use my horn. I will only really use it for two reasons.

1. Someone is about to hit me or could cause an accident.

2. to let someone know to go at a light or gate. I always give them reasonable time and I only tap it to give them a quick low beep.

Oh, I have also used it once or twice to scare my friends or family that are close by, but who hasn't?

Other than that I really don't think of it much.

Use of the horn has completely different meanings over here in the UK....for instance, taxi drivers seem to think that the horn was purposefully installed as a device solely for them to make their fare aware of their presence.....this also includes 2am in the morning.

Lazy fat arsed bastards.

I bet that would wake them up because quite often people drifting into your lane are either daydreaming or texting and they just don't hear the "normal" horn but that air horn would really wake them up. I love the idea.

I really only use it in emergencies or a light beep when someone doesn't notice the light turned green. I instinctively keep my hand on the horn when I think someone is changing lanes and doesn't see me.

I just don't see the point. I feel like honking at someone after-the-fact is like chasing after someone who cut you off while walking in the grocery store and just screaming nonsense at them. No one does that. People are so brave behind the wheel but not in person.

I drive carefully enough that I usually see unsafe drivers coming up behind me and I can slow down to allow them room and avoid being cut off in the first place.

I go out every day with no intention of needing it, then about 10 minutes into my commute someone always disappoints me.

I'm a very defensive driver as it is, having a new 4R and all, you know three car lengths in front, always signalling, not speeding etc, but damned if it doesn't seem like every third car on the road these days has someone texting or something. It's scary.

I was sorely disappointed with the 4R's stock horn so I transferred over a boat horn + compressor I had from an older vehicle. Sounds like a dump truck and quickly gets people off their device pretty quick, but my absolute pet peeve is distracted drivers so screw them and their eardrums.

I think the response to the horn depends a lot on where you are. Ex in a city it is more to just make you aware. In a neighborhood it is more likely to feel like a personal attack.

We've got a reverse lane in Phoenix. In the afternoons between 4-6 its only used for traffic going north.. those who dare enter the lane headed south get my horn wrath, and it happens every day.

I give little beeps to bicyclists well ahead of time so they aren’t surprised. And the occasional anger blast to an idiot driver. But I need to be more careful now with so many people driving with guns. :AK47::gun4::hunter::sniper: :uzi:

I've always wanted a diesel locomotive horn. Not as my "main" horn, but with a separate button for "special occasions".
