Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

CURRENT SETUP:
c59-302 Front

c59-723 Rear

Decided I'm really not into the rake for several reasons. Least important but, most annoying to me is the way it looks. So, I'm going to accelerate the changes to the front end, and hold off on other armor.

Not really sure which one (everything is a compromise one way or another) but I'm going to put a steel bumper and a winch. Likely C4's hybrid.

I rather like the height in the rear and I would like to level the front to match the rear (also compensate for KDSS lean i still have up front).

C59-726 paired with a LT strut like the 5100? Could I keep the front springs (assuming I don't add the steel and winch) on my current setup swap out the struts for 5100's and bring it up a notch or two? What are my options here?

Thanks
You probably need to add about 1" of lift to the front to make it more level, so however many clip heights that is, about 1/2" above where the coil seat is now will make it about 1" taller in the front. You could do that with your current coils without extra front weight.

Then if/when you do add more weight, yeah, use the 726 coils up front.

When are you guys gonna have a kit in stock for a KDSS rig? I’m looking for a minimal lift, just want upgraded parts...but everything says sold out.

Hello! I’m running the c59-729 on my 2015 4runner with king shocks, c4 rear bumper and it’s pretty stiff. You think I should get the 727?

You're running the 729 with only a rear bumper?!?! Why such a stiff spring with so little weight?

That seems completely wrong for the application

So today I tried to install my Dobinsons 302 lift (600# 14" springs) using the "no spring compressor method", but I couldn't get enough compression. The struts would only stick up about 1/4 an inch past the washers and bushings, not quite enough for the top nut to grab. I don't know if they were stuck, but whenever I tried to add more pump from the floor jack, it just started to lift the truck instead of compressing the spring further. I'm sure it was a user error, and not a Dobinsons issue.

I used this same method to install my 5100's last year but admittedly I was using stock coils at the time. I may have to take this to a shop. In hindsight, maybe I should have purchased the coil overs pre-assembled. Appreciate any tips you have.

I recently added a 4x4 Labs rear bumper and I'm running the 701V. So far I like the ride quality. I'd say it's firm but not stiff or harsh. It's appropriate for the bumper and any additional weight for what I throw in the back. It also gives the truck a nice rear rake so that when you are loaded you aren't ass down. It rides a hell of a lot better than when I had no bumper and Icon 2" springs. Maybe look into the 701v, I know a lot of others as well who have switched to them and really liked the ride quality.

I don't think the 729 is necessarily inappropriate for his situation, depends on the setup, his gear, and how much load is carried for DD and for camping. The 727 is rated for an additional 200-400lbs. That rear bumper alone weights 250lbs. If he's running a rack, sliders, skids, fridge, drawers, hi-lift you will quickly and easily exceed 400lbs. Then when you throw actual camp gear, water cans, jerry cans, food, people in the back you will be way over the load capacity of the 727. See my comment above. I'm running a 4x4 Labs rear bumper with the 701v variable rate coils for 600-800lbs. Even when I'm unloaded I think the ride quality is good and yet it will be ready to handle any additional weight from camping gear.

I think if you talk to Mike at Dobinsons he'd recommend going with the 729 with an added rear bumper. Sometimes I think expectations also need to be kept in check. There are so many variables when it comes to ride quality that it's hard to say that it's one thing or the other. Tires, shocks, spring rates, and weight all come into play. Tires could be too harsh. Shocks could be valved incorrectly. Springs rates not appropriate for load. With the weight of a rear bumper sometimes no matter how much you try to match springs and shocks it's hard and near impossible to regain stock ride quality. That's just the nature of the beast sometimes when you mod trucks.

Rubbing?

It’s been roughly 5,000 miles and I am completely thrilled with the ride both on and off road. Super smooth on dirt roads.

For me it’s absolutely perfect for driving in town and loaded down with camping gear for 5. The suspension definitely increased my confidence level while driving a loaded rig down the road.

Im runnin:
k02 e rated 285/70/17
Dirt king tubular ucas
302 front springs
700 struts
325 rear springs
705 rear shocks (soft)

I'm looking at a similar setup and am curious if you have any rubbing issues with this setup and the 285s? Are they mounted on stock wheels and what caster were you able to achieve? I have KDSS and am adding a SSO bumper and winch so have to accommodate the weight so won't run exact same setup but looking at that lift height and moving from 265s to 285s (K02)

THanks

That's because the new coils are stronger and longer than stock, so this method usually doesn't work. Best to use the proper tools, a strut spring compressor, or take the parts to a shop to have them assemble it.

How long since you added the Kings? Shocks are ultimately what control the ride quality, with their valving.

The C59-729 is the most commonly used rear spring for a heavy rear bumper with all the add-ons plus everything else you can bolt to your vehicle.

The C59-727 would do it, but they wouldn't provide the lift height. The other alternative is the C59-701V but at 3" with all the weight.

You're absolutely right.

Not sure I'm following along with what you need. Sure, you can set your height on the front to whatever the other guy has to match it up in terms of lift height.
My question is with the C59-314 up front and C59-325 in rear with stock front bumper would I get a level stance with the 5100's set at 1st notch? I want the truck to look level I hate the rake look. This is the setup I want to go with.

Oh, OK.

C59-314 with the 5100's set to the lowest clip with stock bumper will be 3" of lift. Adding the clip up will add more height thru preload. Not sure if you'd want to do that.

The C59-325 will be 2" lift with stock weight,

3" front and 2" rear looks pretty level in most people's eyes. If your goal is completely level on the road with no weight or people inside, then I'd suggest you use the 314's up front at the lowest clip, and run the 1.5" C59-505 rear coils, as opposed to adding more front height.

So the C59-325 will give me a slight rake with the C59-314 up front?I don't mind a little rake what I don't want is to put someone in the back and have a negative rake.

Correct, about 1" of rake.

People in the back seat won't affect it as much, but luggage and gear in the back is what causes the most squat on the rear suspension.

Yep. I found a shop today about 5 miles away. They will assemble the coilovers and I'll install in my truck from there. I tried two different spring compressors from nearby auto parts stores, and neither were big enough> LOL. I'll post pics once the lift is installed.

Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - lots of choices

Pulling the trigger on a full set of springs and diff drop to pair with my bilstein 5100's.

since this setup will be likely the majority of the user base here, I'll be sure to provide some feedback to the group.

NOTE: I have KDSS

What did you with? Any photos? I have a 19 ORP with KDSS, also ordered some 5100s. Looking at a full set of springs since I have a front bumper and winch on the way and plan to pull a hiker trailer in the near future.
I also have an ARB UVP set to mount.
