Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

So just finished doing the reset/balance. Same driveway, I originally was measuring a 1.2inch lean. After the balance, its down to .2 inches which is WAY more than I expected lol. Would have been fine with a .6-.75. Also, not sure why but the car feels soo much better on the road now. It felt great after swapping in the 302 coils but after the lean started developing, the ride quality went down a bit. Back to normal now. Loving it!
Great to hear.

Perhaps the KDSS system was holding the piston in a certain spot, causing firmness or something. It's such a strange system.

Thanks for the instructions! Will likely get a set of Durobump bumpstops soon so the ride will be even better! Just worried about their height as I dont want to lose any uptravel.

Yea, I have a love hate relationship with KDSS. On road. my god.

Offroad, I love having a sway bar in off camber situations! But boy, Suspension upgrades with KDSS can be limited.

On and off-road changes drastically for the good. Nose dive and roll gone, on ramps to the interstate improve. Only off-road I have is beach ruts, gravel roads with holes that you would slow down in a stock ride. I feel the more speed you have the better the float. Didn’t install the UCAs yet. Didn’t have them initially during the install and alignment was no issue. They are in hand if the ride gets squirrelly.

Are those 285's?

How do you like them? I ran them for 2yrs on my F150 and loved them, curious to the E load on the T4R.

- MPG hit? Acceleration / braking hit?

They’re an E load. Only have around 3,000 miles on them. I just did a 300 mile trip and it’s an absolute gas guzzler with the new tires and all my non compliant aero dynamic crap on her. I probably did around 79 mph the majority of the drive. She’s a huge fat chick!! Braking and acceleration wasn’t really a notable difference. Comfort and ride noise is amazing, I thought moving to the E would have killed the ride. Those damn Dobinson’s eat those bumps like bubble gum! Please last forever. 65,000 mile warranty through discount tire, if I recall.

I was able to install my c300 front springs and c599 rear springs this week. I kept my Bilstein 5100s and set the front and the lowest clip. I have a 1” rake now, perfect imho. Ride is vastly improved, smoother, yet more stable and solid feeling. I can’t get the body roll or nose dive I used to experience on stock springs to appear. Well worth the upgrade. I am running BFG 265s for reference.

Hey Ozzir,

Im running just the stock trail/offroad wheels. No rubbing whatsoever at full lock offroad (was surprised). Kept the stock wheels as the offset seems to require the least amount of chopping for bigger tires. Plus the Valve stem guards are nice. I couldn't see myself spending hundreds on aesthetic items that I know ill scratch up haha...maybe if I had more disposable income but 35 tire work first. Really pleased with the 302/700 combo. Not entirely pleased with the rears (height is good) but thats more on me as I'm carrying 150+ constant weight. Need to get the 701s instead of the 705s.

Heres how it looks

Cool. Looks great. That bumper chop makes it look more aggressive imo. i like it.

I got the same tire size and I was also looking at that configuration.

According to the website C300 should give 1.75" and C599 about 1-1.25".

Looking at your pictures, the light gain seems greater than that.
Can you confirm?

Hi Mike I’m planning on purchasing a complete lift with C59-300 front springs and C59-599 rear springs. My question is should I purchase the ucas right away? I’m wanting to do this right the first time and it’s way easier to do it when it’s already all apart. It’s on a 2018 trd off road non-kdss and I plan on having it for the long haul. Thanks

Hi Mike, I was referred to you by other members. I am located in the Miami area as well... I'm looking for a low maintenance kit. These were my questions on my post:

" I live in flat South Florida and I daily drive my 5th Gen. I do not need a killer set up but I do want my truck to be properly lifted. My options are:

1) Bilstein coilover lift from Toytec with Total Chaos UCA (what are some benefits vs regular shock and spring set up? )

2) OME 3'' lift with stock UCA

3) Bilstein 5100 all around with OME springs

For wheel and tires: Stock trail wheels with 285/70/17 ... Now, when it comes to this set up I have read that it will rub if I replace the UCA's so in the event that I do need to replace the wheels I would go with:

ICON Rebound 17x8.5 0MM offset with 285/70/17 KO2

I do want a set up that would be efficient and comfortable for daily driving. I don't mind keeping my stock wheels as I do like them. I would rather not spend the money on new wheels but if they are needed for proper set up then I rather do it right the first time.

I've read numerous threads but I can't seem to make up my mind - If there are any other better set ups please feel free to suggest. Thank you! "

Hey bud,

For that height, UCA's aren't required. You could add them if you want a stronger UCA than stock, but it's not required to add them since the lift height will only be about 2".

Yes, it's easier to add them while doing the struts at the same time while it's apart.

For low maintenance, Total Chaos uniball UCA's aren't ideal. You're better off with a maintenance free set of UCA's like Dobinsons with a sealed ball joint and no greasing required.

What lift height do you want? I'm guessing 3"? 3" requires UCA's, so if you run stock UCA's, your alignment won't be set right.

My daily driver is a 5th Gen and for 3+ years I ran Dobinsons twin tube struts, shocks, coils, and UCA's. I took them off in January to add the Dobinsons MRA 3-way adjustable monotube shocks.

This kit is zero maintenance:
C59-300 front coils
GS59-574 front struts
UCA59-002K UCA's
C59-325 rear coils
GS59-705 rear shocks.

That's 3" front and 2" rear with stock weight.

If you put fat tires on stock wheels (stock offset) then the fatter tire can contact the stock UCA which is why people suggest more offset wheels.

Awesome thanks for the quick response. I’ll be placing my order this weekend.

Hey Mike,

Im looking into starting the process of putting together my parts list. Trying to figure out what exactly i would need. For weight reference currently im all stock but looking to get a slimline aluminum front bumper, full length rack, and aluminum sliders before the end of the year.

Do you go suspension first or add the weight first?

Im looking to keep it as minimal as possible ideally on stock UCA's with the stock trd wheels.

And hoping to achieve a 2-3" lift if its possible.

Im new the suspension game in off road vehicles so forgive me if this is too vague

Hey bud, if you wanna keep the stock UCA's, then you need to keep the front height to 2.5" or less.

So you could do 2.5" now and have it squat down when you add a bumper later down the road. Then on the rear you could do any height from 1-2". 2.5" front and 1.5" rear is super common.

That way you can add lift now to get a better ride and some height, then just expect it to come down a little later, especially if you're only adding light weight accessories.

Here's a link to the gallery on my site to help give you some ideas:

Thank you. So what youre saying is by doing UCA's with this set up you are suggesting, I would need to also replace my rims as the OEM ones will rub on the Dobinson UCA's ?
