Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

Thanks for the awesome pics.. I have the same IMS setup coming to replace the same Daystar-spaced XREAS as yours.. How does the IMS ride compared with the XREAS?

Not even in the same planet. IMS ride super smooth, like butter. With XREAS and spacers you feel alot more springy when on the gas and brake, this is probably due to the preload on the coils, but with the IMS setup feels alot more like a good suspension is suppose to feel. I noticed the difference right away going over speed bumps in my neighborhood. With spacers feels more harsh especially when your rear tires roll over the bump and coming up and over the bump, you feel your coil tension release and slam the asphalt like as if your shocks can't dampen the spring load. Mike was able to give me the exact specs I needed to achieve my 3/2.5 lift and he was spot on.
Also I installed it myself and deleted all the XREAS including the pump, and hardlines and it was not hard at all, just a little time consuming. Let me know if you'll be attempting install on your own and let me know if you have any questions.

Hey Mike!

Looking to strip the leaking XREAS from my 2012 Limited with 110K miles. Due to family accessibility needs, I want to stay stock height but we do pull a travel trailer a few times a year with around 400 lbs hitch weight and a WDH.

Looking at replacing the struts and keeping the stock coils...

Front: Dobinson IMS59-50700 plus SC59-001 front top caps
Rear: Dobinson IMS59-50705 (comfort)

I know there is the IMS59-50701 (constant rear weight) but that may not apply when we only pull the trailer a few times a year.

Any feedback?

Hey bud.

That's going to be a great upgrade. Yeah, the comfort rear shocks will be best for that vehicle since it's all stock weight and stock height. When you do tow here and there, the car will act different then, but no worse than how it was when the Xreas was working well. I'd say it's not worth running the 50701's unless you keep at least 200lbs or more in the back at all times. A loaded 3rd row seat would count towards this as well, just an FYI.

And those are correct for the front too!! They're currently in stock, and don't forget to use the coupon code in my signature when on my site Exit Offroad are the Dobinsons Suspension Experts in the USA

Awsome, Mike! Just to confirm, OK to keep stock coils?

I may add Firestone air bags in the rear at some point, but with the WDH it doesn't seem necessary.

Yep, no problem keeping the stock coils on there.

I actually made this new IMS kit last week, so that people who want to save money and keep the stock coils or just level it up can do so with the IMS struts and shocks (which is kind of what Falcon do).

Hey Mike, I’m running the twin tube 705 shocks in the rear with 325’s

The front is IMS 574 extended travel with 302 coils. These ride and feel great.

The back feels a little “harsh” when unloaded (that’s how I daily drive it). The 705 are the twin tube comfort valve I believe but would I see enough of an improvement going with IMS 701’s in the rear?

I’ve been back and forth on upgrading these for a while as I feel a little fade in the twin tubes after maybe an hour or so of hard Offroad driving. Thoughts?

We need to see if SpeedyKevin can chime in with his thoughts and experience here. He had a similar setup from memory and is now on the IMS.

You'd be the first guy I've heard of to say the 705's are harsh, they're softer than the 701's. The IMS will handle the offroading better, and you can go with the 701's, but you can expect them to feel firmer when daily driving than the current 705 twin tubes you're running

I currently have the 677V on my 5th Gen with a steel swing-out bumper (270#), full-size spare (100#), drawer system (90#), tools/gear (50#), hi-lift (30#), 4gal jerry can (35# filled), 20L water jug (45# filled), RTT (120#). The current coils squat with all this weight. Would you recommend the 701 as the next upgrade? I don't keep the jerry can, jack, water jug, or RTT on year round.

Are the long travel coils the only option? Any shorter coils suitable for the job? Thanks.

Hey man,

If you want the ~3" of lift, then yeah, the LT coils are the only option. You'd go up to the 701V's.

If you want less height but stronger spring rate coils, you can run the C59-329's, but only as long as you're not running LT shocks, or they'll get loose and could fall out.

What are your hub to fender measurements as it sits now? 3" lift is usually 25".

Hey Crikeymike, I’m looking to try and order the IMS suspension kit before the price increase for a 4runner that I plan to get in the Summer and had a question if you don’t mind:

Could I achieve a 2.5” lift with the 314 front shocks and 574 front struts? Ideally, I would like to have the ability to retain a 2.5” lift if I add weight down the road but don’t want quite as high as 3” as the 314 coils mention on your store page.

Thanks in advance!

Perfect timing, I was about to ask the same question, I may add the warn bumper and winch, roughly 160lbs combined.

Mike,
Most of the forum posts and YouTube videos that I have seen about upper and lower rear control arms, the person just replaces them at the stock locations. I watched one from Dobinsons with a guy named Hayden Titmarsh (Dobinsons Upper & Lower Trailing Arms Informational Guide - YouTube). In it he states that when you lift a truck it moves the rear end forward in the wheel well. After installing the MRA59-A701 & C59-701v in the rear of my 4 Runner. I measured the distance between the leading/trailing edge of the wheel well, divided in half and marked the center. Then ran a homemade plum bob. Like he stated the center line of the hub is forward of this line by about an inch. So when my upper & Lower control arms get here. I will make the lowers longer to push the rear end back to center in the wheel well. Then use the uppers to adjust the pinion angle back to parallel. The question I have is about the drive shaft. Is the stock one going to be long enough, or do I need to start looking for a longer one?

With a standard sway bar installed (non kdss) you can't have the coil seat lower than OE which is 213mm. The sway bar will hit it otherwise. So unless you'll be adding weight to the 314s to lower the height, you can't do that. You'll need 302's instead.
