Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

Hey Mike,

I'm looking to upgrade from my basic twintube OME set up to the IMS set up from Dobinson. The parts I'm looking at are below:

Front Springs: C59-352

Front Shocks: IMS59-50574 Monotube IFP Shocks 2.5"-3.5" (1" added Height)

Rear Springs: C59-331

Rear Shocks: IMS59-50701 Monotube IFP 0-3" Lift

DD59-527K Diff Drop

My question is about the springs if they're over kill or not. I have a full drawer system, fridge, full rear bumper w/spare carrier, full skids, GOBI rack, RTT, front bumper & winch (I'm sure I'm forgetting something) .

I was leaning towards the heavier load stuff because I went too light before and now I barely have a lift at all. I'd rather have a stiffer ride and not have issues with settlement or rubbing in the future. (my other ride is a lifted ram 2500 so this thing will ride better no matter what, lol)

Am I on the right track or do you recommend lighter springs?
Hey bud,

Yeah, that setup would work. The front for sure is no problem.

You're probably only at 600-800lbs on the rear, but it depends how much you load up with when you go on a trip. Usually the C59-329's would work for that weight, but I get it that you want it as strong as possible back there as well.

Just make sure you have UCA's up front and rear sway bar links as well.

This page here will show you all those parts and options: Dobinsons 4Runner IMS Suspension Kit for 2010-23 (0-3.5")

Hey Mike, I'm looking to get some rear coil springs to give my 4Runner a bit of rake. I installed some OME BP-51s and I'm at 22.5" in the front and 22" in the back. The front looks quite a bit higher.

I'm really considering the C59-675V for the variable spring rate. Would like to get a more comfortable ride. The fronts are smooth, but rear is a bit harsh at times.

I'm guessing the 675Vs will sit at 25"? I could bump up to a 3" lift in the front to accommodate for the longer rear springs. Would those springs work with my shocks? I also considered the C59-325 if I wanted to stay at 2". The truck will be empty most of the time, with an occasional camping trip and off roading with the family. I have the 3rd row, and may get a roof rack in the future.

Also, I wanted to get your opinion between the 2 springs - mainly what the differences are in ride quality. Thanks!

Hey bud,

The 675V and 325's ride almost the same, as they're both very close to the same final spring rate. You probably wouldn't notice a difference between the 2. I'd say go with 2" in the back so you don't have to adjust the fronts up so much. The taller you go with less down travel, that takes away some ride quality from not having more even articulation.

Yeah, 675V's would be about 25" hub to fender. The 325's on a bone stock vehicle are more like 24.25-24.5" sometimes.

Yeah I didn't want to go much higher anyways, so thanks for the input. 325s it is then!

Crikeymike Was wondering if you have any Rear Spring suggestion for me?

Current setup:
F: 5100's in 2nd notch with 2883 springs
R: 5100's with 2895e springs

New setup:
F: 6112 w/ heavy load springs and 1/4 or 1/2" top spacer
R: keep 5100's or get icon 2.0's; Springs: ??, or MT extended travel kit

with the current setup and all the additional weight it is sagging quite a bit so I figured its time to upgrade. current fender to hub measurements are: 21.5F, 22.5R

Weight:
F: Warm bumper, winch, dual AGM batteries, ARB twin compressor, Magnuson Supercharger. Est 250-300lbs

R/center: RSG Sliders, RSG full steel armor underneath, rear leveling platform, fridge with slider, 8" sub, recovery gear, tool kit Est. 200lbs extra

I also have an SSO roof rack and carry a 120lb smittybilt XL on the roof when camping.

I would like to end up with 3" front lift and 2.5-3" rear lift with all the current weight.

Current options I am looking at are OME 2896 or 2898 springs, Toytec Flex HD springs, or the Metaltech Extended travel rear kit with either medium or heavy springs. Open to dobinsons option if you have anything that would fit this, especially in an extended travel option.

Any advice appreciated.

The 677V springs could work but you're probably a little too heavy with the tent on there. The 701V springs would be more ideal to get a solid 3" of lift unless you'd like to have less. The variable rate coils will ride the nicest loaded and unloaded.

This page breaks down all the rear coil options.

Thanks for the reply. Under that weight, where would you expect the 677v springs to settle? and are those long travel springs?

As the for 701v, without the tent I am guessing it would be >3" lift? Since I do not have the tent on 90% of the time my main concern is lift height without the tent on. I take it off with a winch in my garage when not in use.

About 2.5" probably with the tent but these would be great without the tent

Yes they're long travel

About 3.25"-3.5" maybe without the tent

Sounds like the 677v would be the closest option then for daily driving. I am guessing 3" not loaded(with just current static weight from armor/sliders/fridge/rack), 2.25-2.5 with tent+camping gear on top of that?

I guess to get the full extended travel I would need to price out the rest of the pieces of the metaltech kit(arms, brake lines, extended shocks, bump stop extensions).

Yes that's right. I sell most all of that on my site too:

Finally going to ditch my Bilsteins for Dobinsons...

Hi Mike! I have a 2013 4Runner Trail w/ KDSS and I'm finally going to upgrade my Bilstein 5100 setup to a complete Dobinsons lift.
My current setup: Bilstein 5100's front and rear, OME 2884 coils in the front, OME 2895e coils in the rear, and SPC UCA's.

A couple of years ago, I added a C4 Lo Pro bumper + winch which adds approximately 100 - 120 lbs in the front. I also have a Rigd Ultraswing in the rear with a full-size spare, a C4 ladder, and 2.5 gallon Fuelpax which adds approx 200 -220 lbs (big time guessing here).

My planned Dobinsons setup would be the IMS lift kit w/ C59-314's + IMS59-50574 in the front, C25-325 + IMS59-50705 in the rear. I also plan on replacing the SPC UCA's w/ Dobinsons UCA59-002K. I was wondering if this would be an appropriate setup? Thank you in advance Mike!

Hey bud

Yeah that setup is super common and would work well for you. That's not too much weight on the rear, so you'd be at about 2" still. Up front it depends where you set the coil seat height to, but about 3" set to 213mm is where they would be.

More people are switching out from SPC's because of the issues with their ball joints and bushings. Some last years and some not so long.

All the parts and options are listed on this page:

Yes! That's exactly why I'm switching them out. The shop I take my 4Runner to recommends going with a full Dobinson's setup. I'll be sure to check out the link. Mike, I appreciate the quick reply. Thanks again and have a very Merry Christmas!

Dobinsons just announced today that the IMS59-50705 rear shocks have been discontinued and replaced by the IMS59-50701 shocks. They have been re-valved for better all around performance and reducing the amount of parts to have to stock and keep track of. Anyone with any backorders of IMS59-50705 will be sent the new version IMS59-50701 shocks when they arrive in another week or so.

Just installed on my 23 ORP Dobinsons C59-300 & C59-599 with comfort valved GS shocks and couldn't be happier. Ordered the Exit Offroad pre-assembled. I installed it in my garage with hand tools in about 5 hours by myself. Includes a break and clean up. I have very little experience working on vehicles so I triple checked everything.
The set up is exactly what I was looking for. Mild lift and rides so smooth, not stiff but took away some nose dive and lean in corners. I've had 5100s, OME, and Ironman on other vehicles and this has been by far the most comfortable. Not apples to apples because it's different vehicles though. 275/70r17 Cooper AT3 LT going on now. Vehicle is our travel vehicle but I also go on unimproved trails and farm land every now and then. I really can't recommend this setup enough for people in the same situation.

That's great to hear!! Sounds like it's setup exactly how you wanted it. Post up some photos when you have some to share!!

5 hours is not bad at all, especially when others have taken double the time in the past on here. I'm working on another project here at home, I took 5 hours yesterday to mark and drill 6 holes!! LOL

Man, I was planning on waiting until the tires need to be replaced to lift (since I'll be out of warranty by then anyway due to miles)...but I may not wait. Just not sure how dumb it will look with stock size tires.

Your looks great though...

It honestly looks fine with factory size. 275/70r17 isn't much bigger.
