Dobinsons Suspension - 4th Gen Options

Hi Mike, how close are you guys to launching MRR stateside? I’m not ready to buy yet but am interested in hearing more about it.

Loaded question. We're waiting for some design changes/upgrades to go through before investing in the stock and bringing it all over here, so we're not quite sure on a timeline yet.

The MRR with resi and without are both kind of being put on hold - as in not stocking here - until some requested upgrades and updates have been made. There's nothing wrong at all with the current version, but Americans have a few more features they're after, so we've been adding and testing some new things on them and getting them right before we do a proper launch here.

Finally got around to installing my suspension this past weekend. Tires are 295/70/17.
Up front: C59-300 paired with GS59-220 and a 1/4” top plate spacer.
In the rear: C59-677v paired with GS59-575. No weight in the rear. DSC_4274.jpg

Hey that sounds good to me, any improvement or tailoring of the product to make it better for the customer is a sign of good R&D.

Curious, what kind of features are more desired here in the US?

It's also nice to hear there may be two variants of the suspension (with/without resi), sounds like there may be at least two price points for the whole kit.

Regardless, that's good news. Hope you guys are able to get the changes requested and get them here. This kit is high on the list of my options, when I get rid of my XREAS stock suspension.

I'm currently investigating this, as it definitely shouldn't be as described here.

Here's another 4th Gen with the same 701V installed and 600-800LBS of rear weight, maintaining good fender clearance and lift height.

Hey Mike, are you still investigating?

I've already got a front diff drop and new UCA's installed (and I believe the brake lines have been extended).

To confirm this is what you are recommending...

Front: C59-350 (730 lb FT coil) with GS59-220 (FT strut) for 3" front lift

Rear: C59-701V (600-800 lb Rear coil) with GS59-575 (Rear strut) for 3" rear lift

Thanks!

that's all the height you got in the rear with a 2.5 - 3" 400lb+ spring and the longest shock they offer? I would've thought it would be much higher. front looks about right. I would be I would be hesitant going with anything smaller for a 3" front lift, even without those 1/4" spacers.
I was recommended to go with the C59-325 spring and GS59-705 shock in the rear for that same 3" lift up front (without the 1/4" spacer).
Maybe the C59-675v spring and the GS59-701 shock would be appropriate for the 3" lift up front?
Does that sound right? can anyone with familiar with the product shed some light on this?

It drives just fine. Can be slightly bouncy dependent on the road but no real problems. I haven’t paid attention to any lean so I’m not sure

No. There was just some anomaly with his situation that we couldn't work out why he didn't get the proper lift height.

I don't remember if that's what I recommended, but usually I wouldn't change it afterwards hahaha. That would be the right setup for a heavily loaded 4th Gen. Or you could go up to the C59-352 to gain additional height again on the front end, an additional 10mm of lift.

Your post is kind of backwards.

C59-325 spring and GS59-705 shock in the rear - That's for 2" rear lift, to provide a more level truck.

If you want more lift on the front, go from C59-300 up to C59-302. They're 10mm taller in free height and will add 20mm in lift.

I had my setup installed for a few hundred miles now. Overall, I'm generally happy. Mike was great to work with and answered all my questions. The fit/finish/quality is top notch.

I ended up with the:
C59-302 front springs
GS59-221 front struts
C59-505 rear springs
GS59-637 rear shocks

Unloaded, it tends to bounce around quite a bit and on our frost heaved roads its uncovered every knock and rattle my car has. Maybe I'm a good candidate for the softer valved shocks or need to add some weight to the back to settle things down.

I'm noticing the SAME exact issue in the rear and asked Mike about a softer valved shocks and he suggested GS59-705. I might go this route as my cargo area only has 75lbs of extra load back there.

Sorry in advance that this is a little long. I just had everything installed and drove it across town and took some measurements when I got home. I just wanted to see if this is roughly what everyone else has been seeing for lift.

I realize the standard way to measure this stuff is from the center of the tire to the fender. I didn't realize that initially and I measured from the ground to the fender when I first went from stock to my 5100 set up 5 1/2 years ago. So all of these measurements are from ground to fender to keep it apples to apples comparison.

Measurements are:
Stock @ 101k
33.25'' Driver side front
32.75'' Passenger side front
35.5'' Driver side rear
35.5'' Passenger side rear

Bilstein 5100's installed @ 113k. Fronts set at 1.75'' with stock coils and FJ Cruiser coils on the rear:
35'' Driver side front
34.5'' Passenger side front
36.5'' Driver side rear
36.25'' Passenger side rear

I then went with 255/75 tires. I didn't take measurements with this setup right away, but I did the other day so I could compare to the new setup. So measurements with the bigger tires and Bilstein setup taken @ 189k:
35.5'' Driver side front
35.25'' Passenger side front
36.75'' Driver side rear
37'' Passenger side rear

Now, to my current measurements. I went with the 302 front coils w/ 221 struts and 505 rear coils w/ 705 shocks. Also installed JBA UCA's.
37'' Driver side front
37'' Passenger side front
38.5'' Driver side rear
39'' Passenger side rear

So I basically gained and additional 1.5'' over the 1.75'' I already had in front and about 2'' over the .75'' I already had in the rear.

My total gain from stock to current is (about .5'' of this is due to bigger tires):
3.75'' Driver side front
4.25'' Passenger side front
3'' Driver side rear
3.5'' Passenger side rear

Some of this I'm sure can be attributed to the old coils were a bit tired and were sagging the whole setup more than they did 150k ago.

Does this sound about right to get this much lift from this setup? The stated lift of these is about 2.5'' in front and 1.5'' in rear. I know there is some variation to that, but what does everyone else think?

THANK YOU!!!!! wish you would have posted this up last week. this would have changed my spring order. i JUST installed my 302s last night and they have more lift than expected, note i didn't install my 505s yet. so the rear is 5100s w FJs and 1.5 DS.

before: 5100 set at 1.75 and FJ springs was 36.5
new: 5100 set at .5 and 302 now at 38.25

so now the quandary.....set the 5100s at 0 and see what happens or go with 300 and 599s...hmmmmm

but to answer your question. YES the lift numbers i think are on the conservative side. BUT man the springs ride w the 5100 ride GREAT!!!

i just want to get back to this height and look.

Our coils should only be put on 5100's at the lowest setting. You're supposed to get the lift height from the coils, not from preloading them with a raised spring seat.

The 5100 increments were based on stock coils and stock spring rates, so you'll end up with extra lift if you raise the clip heights up.

thanks mike for your reply. i dont know what i was thinking!!! i am going to lower the perch to 0 and see how it sits. hopefully it'll come down to where i want it.

Can the 2.5” front coils be used with the GS59-220 front struts???

Yes, but you'll be at 3.5" of lift then. The GS59-220 strut has a taller coil seat that adds ~1" of lift height to whatever coils you use.
