Does anybody use Carista?

One thing I've been pondering for a while - if you leave your carista (or any bluetooth adapter) plugged in to your OBDII port, you are opening yourself to a potential hacking.
The people that are adopting the use of bluetooth OBDII port readers are increasing and the people that know how to hack them are increasing. A chat in the office revealed recently that it's not beyond the realm to take control of various functions. When I get a moment I'll look into it further as I've not seen it done with a Toyota yet, so might be fun to see how far I can get as a relative ludite armed with a Carista Plug, my 4Runner and a few articles I was able to glean information from on Google.

You're not wrong BUT the thing is the adapter isn't powered when the ignition is off and Bluetooth class2 range is 30 meters at best. The chance of someone picking up your adapter then having enough time to pull something off on you is like winning the lottery odds, maybe not powerball odds, certainly lottery though. I guess unless it is someone in your office or close to where you normally frequent. Then again you can simply unplug it when you're done 
I have no idea what is even accessible via OBDII port. Usually most of it is read-only diagnostic wise, apart from the typical chimes/windows/locks/maintenance light kind of thing (unless of course you own a Jeep

I don't have anything specific about 5th gen runners, but people have been able to shut cars down by driving along next to the vehicle with the OBDII-Bluetooth "adapter" (a misnomer), accessing it and commanding it. I tend not to be paranoid about such things, but you can see where some might be. Techstream works by connecting to the OBDII port. I realize that OBDII is a specific protocol, but there's definitely the potential there.

Mine worked just fine. Are you turning the ignition on before connecting?

Hey, 4Runner friends! Quick question: the Carista customization options post on the first page shows different options than in the manual. For example, "open windows and sunroof with remote" has more options in the manual, such as sunroof "close only," etc. Manual sheet attached--thoughts?

Finally got around to buying the Carista single on Amazon. Or a has dropped to $20. I activated my free month trial and have made a few adjustments. Turning off the dang ECO bar was worth $20 alone!

I just did the same. Minor changes, but the eco bar was one. I also turned down the lock/unlock sound from max to 6. I'll spend a little time with it over the next couple days to see if there's anything else that makes sense to change.

I have that option on my dashboard, is the carista option different than what toyota gives us from the factory. Mine is a 2017 TRD off road.

I can shut off the green Eco light on the left of the dash, but not the bar in the middle screen.

I took screen shots from Carista along the way ... Does the bottom option on this screen look like what you're looking for?

On the 2018 LE, I could disable the green ECO icon from the dashboard, but the eco power consumption graph remained. With Carista, I was able to remove the graph completely.

You can turn the ECO light off via dash options. Carista is necessary to turn off the useless ECO bar display.

Now I understand. Not sure though, my manual looks a little different, though I admit I’m using the pdf manual more than the printed manual, but I’ll dig into this a little more.
