Does Anyone Have A Roof Top Tent?

I have one, but have never put on the 4Runner. I will be doing so in time for the Summit and wanted to find out if anyone else had one and what rack you have it mounted to. Here are some pics of it mounted to my old truck. I have the Maggiolina Airlander.

On the Land Rover, I had Thuele Load Bars as my rack because LR's have a deep gutter. When I purchased the Gobi, they said it would work ad I am sure it will as I have measured the crossbars, etc. Was wondering if anyone else had one or if I am the first to get one mounted up there. I expect to get mine mounted up there in late June in time for the trip. Potato Launcher (FJ Cruiser Forum) and a few others will be heading out on the big slab around the 15th of August. Spending the night in Amarillo, and then heading further to Walsenburg, CO. From there we will go off-road up and over Medano Pass on the 16th and will be camping out on the western slope. On the morning of the 17th we will wake up to a hearty breakfast, and then head down the mountain into the back side of the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Play around there for a few hours and then head into Ouray for a late afternoon arrival on the 17th. Anyone interested in joining us let me know.

I haven't purchased one yet, but I plan on getting one before the Summit as well. I have the BajaRack flat utility, and all the research I've done suggests that most will mount without issue. Keep us updated!

Not yet, though I have been assured by Paul at GOBI that they will mount just fine on the bars provided on the rack, see recent e-mail I received:

Thank you for the information. Just to shed some light on the Gobi roof rack’s design it is designed to be as universal as possible another words not only to be used for cargo but to support attachments such as Axe/Shovel, Hi-Lift jacks, Cargo Straps, Cargo boxes and of course Awnings. By removing the upper rail and lowering the rack by 2 inches you will lose more than you will gain. I understand that placing the tent as low as possible is important for many reasons center of gravity being one and wind drag being another but 2 inches is not a good trade when you think about the loss of equipment attachment integrity and location possibilities. By removing the upper rail you will lose much of the attachment potential of the Gobi roof rack not to mention any roof rack most especially for awnings which many can be very heavy to say the least. I’ve see ARB’s and other roof racks designed specifically for roof top tent applications and that’s great however that’s all the rack is good for holding a roof top tent. I believe in getting as much potential out of a roof rack and your vehicle as possible which is why the Gobi Stealth was designed to be so low and so strong. I suggest sticking with the Gobi roof rack as is and using just about any roof top tent you have in mind.

Haven't figured that out yet... May just keep it in storage and only pull it out on trips. My biggest issue at this point isn't parking garages, though; it's finding a spot to store it when I don't need it!

I hear you on that...I have zero storage space as well...desperately need a garage.

I loved my few years in Ballston, but it's things like that that make me glad I'm back down in GA with a normal house and garage! No more high-rise living. That said, I do miss running the monuments on the Mall.

I agree, I kept it on for about 6 months. It was a little bit of a pain, but only when it rained. The rest of the time it seemed to help keep the car cool since it shaded the top. I later decide to take it off and only put it on for trips.

I know someone with a Columbus mounted on an FJ using a Baja utility rack. I plan on getting a Camping Lab RTT and mounting it on my Baja as well.
