I don't know about this spoiler business but with gas at $3 a gallon, I figured I had to do something to increase gas mileage so today I had my dealer take out the crossbars on my roof rack. I figure that has GOT to have a beneficial effect on wind resistance. I'll get back to you with the numbers after the next few tanks.

Do you really think it will make a measurable difference? You'd probably be better off removing excess weight out of your 4Runner if you want to increase your fuel economy. A lot of people carry extra junk in their 4Runners, and that has a negative impact on fuel economy.

Just playin'wit ya, 44. I really did it because I haven't used a roof rack in about 20 years and the bars just make it harder to wash the roof.

My Personal Experience

I have owned a 2005 v6 (old flat spoiler), a 2006 v8 and currently own a 2009 v6. All three were Sport Versions w/XREAS. I'm going to speak from my experience AND MY OPINION. I've won multiple "One Lap of Florida" Rallies (as a driver) and participated in numerous Gymkhanas and longer competitions. I don't consider myself an expert driver, but at 64 years of age, I've driven a few miles.

Why am I telling you this? Well, it's my first post in this forum and it's a way of introducing myself. Based on my extensive driving of all of the above, MY OPINION IS:

2005 V6 (old flat spoiler) exhibited less stability (more exposure to crosswinds) at speeds above 60 mph

2006 V8 (Raised Spoiler) Good High-Speed Stability (above 60).

2009 V6 (Raised Spoiler) Good High-Speed Stability (above 60).

My personal conclusion: I've had the opportunity to exchange my current raised or high-profile spoiler for one of the older flat ones, and declined.
