From what I have learned and read, if you plan to make any serious numbers with boosting your engine (Turbo or SC) you build up the engine to stand up to the abuse.

Those are fairly respectable numbers IMO on a stock engine that was not modified for SC other than installing the kit.

Agreed they're respectable but the STS remote mount turbo could out perform it IMO

they make a bolt on kit for the Tacoma and if i had to guess most parts are interchangable between Taco and 4R.

according to the Trucktrend article featuring the STS turbo on a stock 3.4L Taco that dyno'd 122hp when stock. soared to 302 rear wheel horsepower with STS kit pushing a mear 9# of boost. it was also rolling on 35" tires

remote mount turbos are often subject to criticism in many performance circles, especially ones that claim you need no extra tuning to run them. but in my experience most people that run them upgrade their fuel delivery and have custom tunes to support the added air and fuel.
 
A bolt on supercharger is likely a bad idea. Unless you can dial back your engine's compression ratio (where's the knob for that?).
 
STS is short for "****ty turbo system" Their quality and customer service is horrible to say the least. In theory it should work well but their execution leaves much to be desired. As far as the TRD yes they offered it for 2 years before its started blowing rods left and right on 2uz's on the tundra and sequoia until they limited the boost to 4 psi. I'm going to run a front mount turbo on my truck 61mm with a t3 housing.

Yup, which ties back to the whole cast rods vs forged rods debacle. The 4runner S/C was canned albeit the superior forged rods found only in 4runners! Oh well.

what is it that leaves so much to be desired? i know a few guys on PT.net run them and i've seen some incredible dyno numbers with them on LQ4 and L18 engines. if you point me in the right direction i might stop recommending these kits to people. i personally have been wanting to do one of these systems because of the ease of install.

My friend Torspd had the sts tacoma kit and he modded to the point it was his own engineered kit rather than sts's. He later became front mount.
