Trying to figure out is this is normal? Or is this bushing deteriorated so bad ? And both sides of the vehicle look like this.

Surprisingly yes, that is normal. A lot of 4runners are like that. There have been a few threads in the past about it, and it's normal.

:gun5:

My co workers 96 looks the same it's driving me nuts not knowing

Are you sure it's a 96.

It's a flaw the 96 4runnera had. They only have 8 body mounts where as 97-02 have 10. The middle ones In between the wheels are non existent on the 96.
Yes that is normal. It's not rotted or falling apart. That mount is supposed to have some movement in it because when the frame flexes and twist that mount has the possibility to break if it's too tight.

Which seems like what a giant rubber bushing is supposed to alleviate...?

My 98 certainly feels like the frame is "less connected" than my previous Runners - but I'm guessing it's more due to all the rubber being old...

I've been looking for new body mounts to fix mine that look like that. I can't believe that is normal. The body is free to lift off of the frame.

your slightly mistaken. just the middle one looks like that. the rest are all securely bolted to the frame so the body will not lift up.
