Does your V8 consume oil?

I've had my 2005 v8 50k miles for about three months now and I noticed it was down about 1/8 of a quart every 1000 miles or so. My experience with other toyotas is that the was NO consumption between oil changes. But sometimes the acceptable consumption spec for a V8 is 1 qt every 1k miles or something like that. I'm running M1 extended performance 5W30.

I'm not seeing oil on the ground and there's nothing unusual going on with the performance of the vehicle. No smoke or anything like that. So, normal? Or something to worry about...

Anyone else experiencing a little oil consumption?

My 04 V8 with 95K doesn't burn enough in between 5000 mile change intervals to register on the dip stick. Conventional oil used (toyota dealer).

Nothing measurable on my dipstick either. If you live where it is very cold it may use more. I do not think you are using enough to worry about it.

Are you're skidplates still installed? When they get dusty they can soak up a lot of leaking oil. I would check and see if the missing oil is getting spread under the vehicle and just isn't dripping yet.

There are a few likely causes that come to mind;

-Valve cover gaskets failing, check sparkplug tubes for oil
-Perform a compression test to check for weak rings
-Valve guide seals
-Failing PCV valve

I have about 98k running amsoil sig series and lose about the same. i park in the same garaged spot and no oil anywhere underneath

03 SR5 V8 w/ 79k and noting measurable on the dipstick. I live in Georgia and it's been pretty cold here, then we'll have a warm burst for a week or so and now it's back in the mid 20's to high 30's. Right now it has Pennzoil High mileage.

Only had mine a short time, but with 105K on it I don't seem to be consuming any oil. The dipstick looks normal everytime I check it.

My 2007 V8 4Runner doesn't burn any oil. Pennzoil Platinum synthetic 5W-30

My former Toyota pickup 4 x 4 1993 V6 burned one quart of oil, either dino or synthetic 10W-30 every 1500 miles. I just fed its appetite. This was the first and only Toyota that consumed this much or any oil.

V8 4x4 with 126K. Check the oil periodically and have not notice any change in oil level. Have been using Mobile 1 5W/30.

So, thanks guys. Seems the consensus is NOT normal, which is what I suspected.

I'll check the following things and hope for a easily found and fixed leak. Now that I'm thinking about it, I think I might have seen a couple of spots on the driveway that weren't there before...

No consumption on my Land Cruiser, with the same V8, and I've not heard about it on the Land Cruiser forum. There has been talk about the PCV valve causing consumption, I'll be replacing mine when it warms up. I've had several vehicles leak oil with Mobile1, stopped when switched to Shell Rotella synthetic. I run Shell now.

All engines will use a little bit of oil...That's just the nature of the design. The question is how much. To me anything more then a pint every 3k miles is too excessive.
