Dog Barrier Recommendations

We transport our dogs in properly sized wire crates which are strapped down. God forbid we get into an accident they will not become projectiles!

Two Midwest Side By Side travel crates are perfect for our two dogs, they fit right next to each other in the back.

Ha we run two PetMate plastic ones size Large that almost fit side by side. I built a 5" riser so that the bolts on the sides over lap, but I'm going to convert that to a drawer soon so I have some storage back there.

I prefer a harnesses, attached to the rings in the cargo area. That way the dogs are free to move around in the back, but in the event of an accident won't come flying forward at me.

Your poor dogs, strapped in harnesses and anchored like cargo or crazy people...

I'm going to start letting my dog drive the car, just so I don't risk hurting his feelings by making him think he might be a dog.
 
Here is our setup-

This was a trip to Ohio shortly after we got the new TE. Plenty of room for our dogs in their crates, as well as our luggage and stuff. The crates are also for their safety.

I tried the harness... Joey thought it was pretty tasty. Told me all about it, maybe 5 miles down the road.
 
dogs generally like crates because they are like their little dens.

Kraeken, which brand and size crates do you have?

the crate size we have now would be too big to have two side by side, but i might be able to get away with a smaller size. we have two pit mixes but one is pretty tall and 75lbs, the other is a smaller 45lb dog.

Thankfully both of our dogs are about 60lbs and fit these perfectly. When we only had Buster (the tan one) we had a larger crate that would fit in the back by itself. He is insane in the car. He loves car rides so much he goes crazy. Nothing else works besides the crate. His goal is to be in the front driver's seat. He would get tangled in the seat belt harnesses, and anything else we tried he got around, even pet barriers.

Custom Dog Crate for the 2010 - 2013 4runner

Hey all... I just finished my custom dog crate designed for the cargo area of the 2010-2013 trail 4runner with the sliding cargo tray! I think it looks great. What's your opinion?

[MENTION=94991]puckslpr[/MENTION] That looks amazing, great job. I would love one of that quality but don't have the skills at this point to build one myself. After looking the prices of some high quality ones, I'm going to do my lift, tires, etc first.
 
Cheap, custom option

I know this is a little late, but I've struggled over a good barrier option as well. I've ordered and tried the one from Amazon that only connects to the headrest and didn't like it because it rattled. I have not tried the floor to ceiling kind because if there was to be an accident, that seems kind of dangerous. I've tried to connect elastic netting but there aren't very many places that will spread it properly to actually block our dogs.

My solution - get a heavy duty grey wire shelf. I got mine from Fred Myer but I'm sure Home Depot or Lowes sell the exact same ones. I don't know the exact length of it but I'm guessing it's 36" wide by about 18" tall, mine cost $14! Put it as far into the car as possible and with a marker, mark where you need to trim so it can be custom fit to the curves of the car (you'll see what I mean from my pictures). I used a bolt cutter and a metal file to cut and take off the sharp metal edges. Then, connect it with a cam strap to the center headrest. No rattling, very secure, super cheap, and easy to put in and take out.

Yesterday I modified my old Xterra dog net to work. It's got an upper and lower pipe. So my brother and I mocked up how to hang them from the small plastic hook in the back. I'll get some pics in a little bit. Bit maybe an hour of work some black paint and the dogs are stuck in the back.
