Hello all, I made a thread a while ago requesting assistance on car audio in a different section on this forum.


Here's what I found so far...keep in mind I have a 4Runner '04 SR5 for those who are curious about my vehicle.


If anyone has recommendations on door speakers that goes well with these head units I link, that would be great. I'm very much into Pink Floyd (especially DSOTM album with heavy bass for the song 'on the run' ...), Led Zeppelin, misc. artists (I mainly listen to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. I have a limited taste of music, literally)

I'm most likely leaning toward the one with Pandora, however the only issue I have is that...I don't want a head unit that will overtake the dashboard where it's fitted for a stock system. A head unit sticking out looks rather silly & ghetto [in my opinion]. Money is not an issue, but I would like to spend wisely as this is a long term investment.


Let me know if you guys find any better head units that you came across today, or something. I'm still looking into speakers

I also purchased the 4300DVD unit for my 2008 based on all the positive reviews, features and value. I have yet to get it installed so I can't comment on how it looks in dash.

For speakers, 6x9's and 6.5" components fit in the front, 6.5" in the rear doors.
 
Personally, I have the Pioneer AVIC-D3 in my HU. It fits very well and doesn't look cheap or stick out, as you mentioned you didn't like. However, it doesn't support Pandora, nor have it as an option, but does come with navigation, DVD player, single CD slot, and can have the IPOD connector cable attached.

I like it, but it's also the one that came with the truck when I bought it, so I suppose I'm a little biased. Is the Pandora option free or do you have to subscribe? How is it run, via satellite like Sirius or XM?
 
I have essentially the same looking unit only with NAV (Pioneer Avic z120bt). It doesn't really stick out. It looks quite good I think. Also, my head unit supports iPhones and will play the Pandora App from my iPhone.

@Revo - So you're saying it does stick out? (even like by an inch)



@Snow - I used to have an ipod connector from my Alpine deck unit in my old '99 4Runner. However, this head unit you are talking about; is the ipod cord installed in the front or can it be hidden in rear in a space such as the glove compartment? Also, does the iPod cord charge the iPhone? My old head unit's cord played music from my iphone, but it never charged my iPhone (guessing it's 'cause iPhone wasn't the phone everyone had at the time as I got the head unit a little bit after iPhone came out)

Just to clarify, those numbers are for a 2004 4Runner right? :) Just making sure we're on the same page here. I hate having to visit my local UPS store to return items for an exchange of item in case issues arises during installation.

I don't know about playing pandora in a car, but based on seeing my brother use Pandora during poker; it has a certain time limit that you reach before you have to wait like an hour or something until you can resume playing music. You can choose a bunch of stations to listen to for a certain amount of time before your time's up then you would have to wait. Of course to avoid all that, you can just buy a subscription based package of Pandora and enjoy music I suppose. Sirius was free when I recently went on a road trip with a friend of mine in his Infiniti g35 car. However, he had BOSE audio system (stock I assumed when I first heard the audio in the car)

I took a look at your thread, and it does indeed look intriguing! I will have to check it out sometime.

Newbie question; does having an amp make a difference with your door speakers if you do not intend on owning subwoofers anytime in the future? I was reading some reviews, and few people were saying something along the line..."these speakers sound amazing, but obviously having an amp will make them sound even more amazing!". I'm not sure if those people who commented already had subwoofers in their car when they left reviews. If so, I may end up keeping my rockford fosgate amp that I've been tryin' to sell and get rid of the subwoofers
 
If you plan to use the stock front door tweeter location you'll have to make a bracket. There are no aftermarket tweets that are direct replacement, that I know of. I just screwed a piece of wood between the brackets and mounted the tweeters to that.

The H/U's internal amp will make your stock speakers sound much better, but aftermarket speakers tied to an amp will be a marked improvement.

I too have a Pioneer AVIC Z120 and it looks great, most people that get in the car don't even realize its not a factory GPS Unit. The Pioneer deck looks 100 times better than the Eclipse TOMTOM unit it replaced. Link in sig.

Pioneer AVH 3200BT in my day car

Nice choice on the 4600, i have the 3200 BT which is cheaper and does all I need. It has the SDHC slot up front, is iphone ready on the front panel and can play video on the bypass.... works great with ipod , iphone. I have this model in my Volvo v70 but would like something similiar in my 08 T4R if I could...
