Don't buy from RockAuto.com

i looked at rock auto's website for your year and specs and found the radiator you bought.

obviously you did not look at the measurements they list right there and go measure your existing one you are replacing, i do that before i ever order a radiator, even at a parts store.

take a tape measure and measure the wrong one and see if it matches what the website says, may be a mis boxed part.

one should not have to do this... this is what quality control is for, quality control should not be at the customer level, and any time it is, its not the customers fault. and hard line companies like this one lose customers by blaming customers for issues that are not customers faults. in any type of business the last co to advertise or sell a product to the customer is taking the responsibility to ensure they are advertising correctly -anything other than that is technically a lie, and false advertisement and can result in a co losing their business license it can be boiled down the theft. now while in this case i dont think it was deliberate and they did not intend to do so, but their actions afterwords dont bode well for them. now with that being said i do not thing in this case that could or would be a plausible outcome, nor even if all of the other terms and conditions were aheared too would it be either, i know im going to extremes here.

I see your point and Nevada's but I have to disagree based solely on that fact that even if I had ripped the box open the day I got it and test fit it, they're telling me they wouldn't take it back. That "just drop it in without bolting it up to verify fitment" is BS. And I think we can all agree on that. If it was blatantly over/under sized than fine but it's not. It's just a little bit off but that little bit is a big deal in this case. If you're selling a product that you're advertising as direct fit, it should be a direct fit.

i think what pbr is trying to say here, is that there should be no need to compare parts, when they are direct replacements, does everyone compare lower ball joints when they replace them, or how about bolts, or filters, or any other part, do you always set the two parts side by side, and take measurements of both to ensure that you have the right part? no i didnt think so at least for 99% of us -even techs. we order a part and unless we know that their could be some discrepancy between parts we dont check. besides how is one supposed to check fitment without installing... someone please explain that to me and pbr. that just simply is unrealistic to do without mock-up installation/placement. i could see if they said no returns if used, but installing and used are two different things. also along with setting parts side by side to check for likeness how many of us check on return policies, weather buying online or in the store in person. -most dealers that you walk into have a policy that states if you order(have the dealer order) a part cause they dont stock it, they dont have to take it back, especially if its opened or out of the packaging -just an fyi. but most good reputable shops only have this to legally limit liability or to limit loss on their side of things, say like you have a specific customer who buys parts to check for bad parts, installs them then finds out its not the bad part, and tries to return it, even though they took great care to not scuff or damage that part... its the same principle as the "right to refuse service to anyone..." but 99.9% of shops and companies dont use this or do this, as its bad for business in 99.9% of all cases, again its only their to limit liability on their behalf.

RockAuto should step up to the plate, weather or not its their fault and exchange this item, and take it up with the manufacture who made the part. i too have dealt with companies who say "nope, not gonna help you, you gotta go to the manufacture, not our issue..." its the last time i will ever go to that company. and when i go to the manufacture or the next co in the "food chain" i make sure to tell them about my experiences up to this point. i have seen on company lose their "authorized dealer" credentials from poor customer service like this. manufactures do not like their distributes or sellers to stiff customers, its bad for business and good companies know this, and wont do business with co that do.

customers are like women, we all talk, and we all have a news network that can rival mainstream media. -look at trail gear, when they first started out trail gear sold cheep sub par parts, and soon it became apparent and they had to do a lot of backtracking and spent lots and lots of money in new marketing and new products to try and turn their reputation around. luckily for them it worked. us toyota guys for the most part dont put crap on our vehicles, we buy toyotas because they last long, are reliable and dependable and can take abuse. we expect the same from our parts both aftermarket, OE, and modifications. if not we let others know and it will soon get out that so and so sells a cheep part or in the case has piss poor customer service.

Hell I agree, I'd call them up again and say You guys sent me the wrong part. Your commercials guarantee that won't happen. Make it right.

I was just mentioning rockauto the other day in another thread, about how I wouldn't buy from them again. I had horrible customer service when trying to redeem 1yr manufacturers warranty on a reman'd ps pump. I gave up after 5 separate emails back and forth with them, and never once talked to the same person twice. I spent somewhere around $1K on that order, $240 on the pump alone. I took it for a loss and a lesson learned and just went OEM for the pump and never looked back.

I too have had trouble with them before...

I went through 3 clutch slave cylinders and 4 clutch master cylinders from them in the process of a year. I only paid for two of them each. Their customer service was fine for me, part quality though, not so much.

I didn't read through 5 pages of this stuff, but from what I DID see, orders were out of the 30 day period or someone was trying to get them to honor the manufacturer's warranty...

I understand the risk, but hey that's a month later after purchase. I've learned to always check parts no matter what it is. sucks. And if I'm not mistaken, warranty claims are to be taken up with the manufacturer and not RA.

Parts do get mislabeled... but they're usually pretty good about getting them accurate. I've had nothing but good luck with them and will.continue to order if I can't get it cheaper through work.

Well, I finally got the hood closed. I dropped the skid plate then I loosened up the radiator in the mounts and then removed the 4 bolts holding the radiator to the rad support. Put a 2x4 on top of the rad and "coerced" it down. Getting the bolts back into the rad support was a b*tch as none of them are lined up now. Tightened the rad back into the mounts and closed the hood. It really fits like sh*t (which if you knew me personally is going to drive me crazy) but its in and the hood closes.

Can you take a dremel to the mounting holes on the side of the rad? A little bit of work to oval them would make it fit better, and the top of the holes would still be resting on the bolt so you'd be just as secure.

Uh, I didn`t compare parts ONCE and went on ahead with the install. I jerry rigged it to make it fit/work but I learned a lesson that day. No, I don`t usually compare bolts side by side BUT I do do my homework beofre buying/replacing bolts. But something along the line of a radiator, you better bet I`m doing a comparison before installation. I do it with all parts; brakes, water pumps even air filters lol.

good for you we should all be as well trained as you, here is a flying pig for your dedication to ensuring you have the right part no matter what; :flypig:

It sucks to hear Rock Auto won't be a little more forgiving with this, sounds like I should stop recommending them to people. Did you look up TYC's part number for our 4runners and verify it on the box? With it being that much off, I could see it being a manufacturing defect.

I started going OEM with parts like this for this specific reason. I have never really trusted the fit of aftermarket parts unless its something like an air filter (maintenance stuff). I realize the OEM rad's are twice the price, but I replaced mine with an OEM at 150k, and I'm not sure I would let a $90 radiator go that long without worrying about the trans cooler or other failure. A radiator can leave you stranded, so it's not something I would go cheap on.

Not trying to make anyone feel bad about purchasing this brand of radiator, for all I know they have lasted 200k miles! Glad you finally got it to fit under your hood.

The part # on the box was correct, TYC1998. Funny thing is, one of the Koyo's I bought in the past came in a TYC box but it fit like a glove. I actually installed a trans cooler at the same time as the radiator so no worries about the milkshake. I only replaced the radiator as preventive maintenance since the truck has 240K on it. But you're right, since getting an actual Koyo seems damn near impossible these days, looks like next time it'll be OEM.

They probably all come from the same factory, as unfortunate as it is. Sounds like it's either a manufacturing defect or an incorrectly boxed radiator.

Good call on the trans cooler, I thought about it but just decided to replace the rad instead. I'll probably be doing it in the future anyway.

I just feel like the trans cooler is money well spent. It's the only absolute guarantee against the milkshake so for $40 or $50 I figure it's cheap insurance.

I picked up the trans cooler recently...just need to find the time to do the install!

Contemplating replacing the rad just for "insurance", I'm approaching 178k.

Working on cars for neighbors and friends rock auto is where I go every time. Sometimes I tell people what to order from rockauto and so far I've only had 1 issue. They took it back and sent the right part in a timely matter. I've ordered from them at least 100 times and only 1 exchange...a good rule of thumb is take the part out compare with new part then install. Not sayin you did wrong just sayin both parties could have handled things better

I bought a radiator for the kids 1997 4Runner from Performance Radiator, the Toyota dealers here in Phoenix, buy form them. The radiator they sold me fit perfect. I guess I got lucky.

I did buy a radiator from Rock Auto for my Army Truck, that fit fine too, but I was told what number to order by the army truck people.

REALLY?
I was getting in the mood to replace mine with an OEM because it's worth the extra $100 over aftermarket for me. Performance Radiator has them for only $137 and free shipping...

Just go get it, it's right next to the I-10, yeah it fit perfect and matched exactly. It looked identical.

people start reading... this is not a problem of he ordered the wrong part, its a problem of they sent the wrong part -sure its incorrectly labeled leading to the assumption that its the correct part, but the OP was sent the wrong part and the company refuses to exchange it, its not like he is asking for a return or he ordered the wrong part...
