Don't get rear ended if you want your trailer hitch ...

As some of you remember, someone nailed my rear end about a week ago. I am finally getting my Runner back today, but it will be missing a crucial piece ...

Apparently, the trailer hitches for the V8 are on national backorder. I was told it can be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months before I get a new hitch put back on my truck.

I can't believe how Toyota runs. There are thousands of 4Runner's on the road and it seems that many common parts are on national backorder. I had the same situation as you but with another part. The brake caliper on my 2003 was faulty and had to be replaced. I get a call that this part is on "critical backorder" which means there are none in the United States or Japan (I assume this is the same situation as you are in). They told me the part could be there in a week or in a few months. It ended up taking months to get in. I hope your part comes in soon!

That would be nice .... but I doubt it will happen as it isn't a defective part or anything from the factory. It is purely the result of someone who shouldn't have a license. And -- I am sure my insurance company doesn't care whether or not I have my hitch.

"National Backorder" can mean many things at a dealership, like: 1) we forgot to order your part; 2) we lost your part; 3) we're too busy to install your part; and, 4) we don't care...

Trust, but verify.

I agree. The reason I am taking there word on this one is because the body shop called me back the same day I dropped it off asking about the hitch. Apparently, the hitch didn't appear on the parts list from Toyota ... so the body shop thought it was aftermarket. I had to explain to them that it was factory (or port ... but same difference...). They verified with the parts guy at the local Toyota dealership that it needs to be ordered directly from the manufacturer as Toyota doesn't stock that part. So --- I assume they are getting it straight from Reece (they still do the hitches for Toyota, right?)
