door locks wont lock if running

so im a 3rd gen guy, but a friend recently bought a 2nd gen. He is gonna swing by tonight so im doing some research first. He says that if the truck is running the doors wont lock from inside or outside.
Now here in alaska its nice to have your truck running outside and be able to lock it and run into a store ( common when temps are below zero...we get to minus 40)

If the motor is running you can't lock the doors with the key fob but you can lock it with a spare key. I had a key cut so I can lock/unlock as necessary but it doesn't have the immobilizer on it. The key will do everything but start the engine.

thanks, he was trying to lock the doors with the door lock switch....with the door open....duh
i told him, close the door, use his spare to lock
that worked
