Door speaker replace/upgrade

Gonna open the doors soon and want to replace/upgrade my front door speakers. Eventually I will do the back as well.

I believe the speakers are 5 1/4" (please confirm) and wanted to see what others have used and would recommend.

Also, do the fronts have built in crossovers or are those remote for the column tweeters?

Front speakers 6", 6 1/2", 6 3/4" work if you use or make new mounting plates.
Rear speakers 5 1/4", 6 1/2" fit by making mounting plates.
The fronts have a harness going from door speaker to the tweeter the filter is mounted at the tweeter.
Use shallow depth speakers front and rear, others interfere with window operation.
If you are using factory HU, don't be expecting great sound it will be good not great.
Factory HU doesn't put out enough to drive new speakers.
I put JBL component 6.5" in front, JBL 6.5" two way in rear door, sub in cargo area.
Any speaker you purchase over 6" or 5.25" will not be plug n play regarding getting them mounted.

just did mine a few months ago. ordered from crutchfield and they included everything. only thing that was not plug n play was the front tweeters and i hot glued them into the location of the old ones.

front - Kicker 40CSS654 6-1/2" Component Speakers
rear - Kicker 40CS54 5-1/4" 2-way Speakers
 
I put the Kicker 6 1/2" in the front and their 5 1/4" in the rear from Walmart. I modified the rear mounts to fit the bigger speakers. My 97 SR5 thread I think shows the end result. I also bought adapter plates from eBay for the rears but reused the factory mounts.

Same as I did with the tweeters. The adapters you get from Crutchfield weren't to my liking made my own out of 1/4" lexan front & rear.

I put Pioneer 3ways - 6 3/4's in the front with no modifications. Use Crutchfield's site for research but do not buy from them. They are the most expensive site around! Pioneer also makes a 3 way 5 1/4's for the rear.

I an going to upgrade the fronts & rears to JL Audio because my old Pioneers are just about shot.
 
Infinty Kappa 6.5" components upfront - barely enough room for the crossover between door guts and panel.

RF 5.25" 2-ways in rear

I'd recommend a separate sub and amp to fill in the lows too.

Fitting the crossover on the fronts was the trickiest part of the install, aside from completely rewiring all of the speakers. As you can see here, that was the perfect spot after a LOT of test fitting for this crossover to fit. The tweeters are ghetto-mounted, as they wouldn't fit in the stock housing.

It's been a while so I don't remember everything it took to fit a 6.5". I think a little trimming of the stock housing/mount of the speaker was also required.

I just replaced mine with Rockford Fosgate in all four doors. I had to do a little bit of crafting to get them in, but it worked. They don't have quick adapters though, but i have mine powered to an amp because the guy who had this 4Runner before me had the wires all screwed up. I think they sound great when tuned properly but they are a little heavy on the high pitches.

Any decent speakers are gonna need an amp to bring out the best in them. It's been mentioned in this thread already but it's worth repeating. Amp them.

I can't tell you how many times I've read people ***** and moan about how crappy there new expensive speakers sound. It's almost always cause they're running them off a deck without an amp. Don't be one of those people. If your gonna do it, do it right.

As far as what speakers to get? Get on head-fi and do some google searching for best 6.5 speakers under $100. Read the reviews and get what you like. If your nor planning on running a sub I'd suggest getting some bass tuned 6.5 " for the rear. The Polk DB651 does really well here and won't brake the bank. Kicker also makes some bass heavy speakers but I'm not a fan of the brand. For the fronts get the best set of component speakers that you can. That will give you the best of both worlds.

Haha, that's ok. At least get a small amp though, that'll do more than anything else.

The second page shows how I got the 6 1/2 speakers to fit on the rear doors. Requires trimming and potentially a wood shim to get it to fit.

Yes yes, perhaps an amp (this is getting expensive)

I also have a bazooka powered sub in reserve that used to be in my pathfinder 100 years ago

If your gonna buy Sound Ord just get it from Crutchfield directly. They'll match Amazons price and give you free install gear and guides. The link for the amp isn't working for me but I looked up the specs and it's plenty to drive the speakers your looking at.

Odly, Crutchfield is the Amazon seller. Same price as on their site direct.
