Door Won't Stay Open

My driver side door wont stay open. Especially if there's a slight breeze or I'm on an incline.

The door appears to be level so I think it might be the mechanism.

This is one of the things I hated about my tC, very frustrating!

Has anyone else experienced/solved this problem?

Pretty much all of my doors don't stay open. The driver door seems the worst. Even the slightest uphill incline (my garage floor, for example) lets it fall back. I wonder if the holder mechanism could be replaced, and if it would help?
 
Well, your door does way a good 50-60 lbs lol, piece of plastic wont last that long under the constant abuse. I understand wanting your doors open when your vacuuming out your vehicle or installing accessories and the like, but other than that, why would you want your door to stay open? Just a question.

so i can blast ac/dc while working on my sweet sweet truck and perming my mullet:fro:
 
I have the same problem in my '01... all my other doors will stay wide open. I imagine it's from the use, seeing as that is the most commonly used door. The door stopper is the little black plastic piece... Wonder how expensive/difficult it is to repair?
 
I want it to stay open when I'm getting in and out of the vehicle. I tend to get in the truck with a lot of stuff and most the time im not quick enough for the door!

Any info on the part number for that plastic piece?

Doors don't stay open

Apologies in advance to the 'self-appointed thread police' for bumping this old one. I've searched quite a bit but this is the only notable --that went nowhere-- thread I can find on the issue.

As our 3rd gens have been around a while I imagine many or all of us are experiencing the trouble with doors not staying open. Has anyone found a cure and is it as simple as replacing the black plastic 'holder' mounted between the two hinges and/or is that replacement easy to begin with.....? I haven't called Toyota Parts yet, as usual I prefer to check here first.
 
I think most would rather have you bump an old thread like this. Shows you already did at least some searching.

The door holder piece is called a 'door check' by Toyota. I replaced mine recently, and yes it fixes the problem. You do have to remove the inner door panel to access/remove the old one and install the new one:

They are different left to right, I only did the front doors:

You are the MAN ! Thank you Charlie. And yes I agree with you and I am one of those who doesn't at all mind old threads being reposted. It's fantastic that valuable information has lived on for years and questions do continue to come up on the same old subjects so..... It's all good.

I'm just curious (after getting whacked by the self-closing driver door recently), what is the portion of this door check that wears out? I assume there is no redneck solution to fixing rather than replacing it?
 
I replaced the door check on my driver's door. The new one is a slight improvement over the old one, but still lame.
The design of the stay(check assy.) seems suited to a featherweight door as might be found on a tiny Toyota hatchback car with hand crank windows. It's way too weak for a larger, power window/power lock/loudspeaker-equipped door. Most other cars I've seen...including low-end hatchback economy cars... have clearly superior stay designs.

Sounds like a good thing to do. BTW, you can get these for half of the ~$80 price of most online places by buying from Amayama, $39 each (shipping is a bit more, but still well worth it).

The next mod I do on my 4Runner needs to be family-friendly. I get some serious grief on these doors closing on my wife and girl's legs, and I want to do something about it, finally. Ideally not spending 200-400 bucks...

Anyone have an old one of these door checks lying around? Really curious how it might compare dimension-wise to this, or something comparable. If like other things I've tinkered with in the past, I'm guessing that there are other viable options out there...

At 11 bucks, that would really nice.

I need to do the same repair myself. Wife has complained about the door not staying open, and quite frankly it's bothering me as well. She has a 2012 Highlander, and I'm wondering...Since it's a heavier door, if the dimensions match, it might be a good mod over the original one. I'll have to find the time and the desire to tear both cars apart.
 
Please investigate this idea of swapping in a Highlander or other part that might do a better job.
The holding power of the original Toyota design is so shamefully feeble that if a Dorman unit turned out to be better, I'd believe it!
 
I was just thinking about [MENTION=198376]4Runner4Leon[/MENTION] and his High-Lift Hood Strut Kit: There is most likely a way to incorporate a small gas support to function for door check. ☺
 
This is especially annoying to me, as my other Toyota is 10 years older and works MUCH better.... I have a feeling something could be swapped in from another vehicle. Of course, I have no urge to do this now that I have good working door checks. :nod:
