Doozi's FJ coil installation

Doozi,
Did you install wheel spacers? Nice epoxy floor. Mine is epoxied, too, but how do you keep yours clean? When it rains it gets all dirty. I scrub it down once a year once it stops raining.

Yes, I installed Spidertrax wheel spacers... 1.25" thick. I love the stance!

Call me crazy, but I mop the floor when it gets trashed! I'm a little obsessive about it! Fortunately, our weather is pretty mild here and I only had to mop it three times this winter!

Believe it or not, I've done an engine swap, 3 or 4 brake jobs, the 4Runner's suspension, a bunch of oil changes, and a whole lot of miscellaneous projects on that floor... it's holding up well!

I'm getting a bit of vibration at about 65-70mph from somewhere... I think that it's coming from the passenger rear. It's been pretty windy the last couple of days so I haven't been able to pin-point the source due to counter-steering into the wind.

Is it possible that after getting a detailed alignment my tires need to be rebalanced for some reason? Maybe they're contacting the road differently or something?

I've got the same issue, same speeds. I've not been able to trace it. I just noticed it after the spacer install, but I don't drive those speeds often either. I'm gonna remove the spacers and see if its still there and if not I'll just check the hub surface to make sure its seated good. If it is in the spacers I don't know where ill go from there.

I was wondering about the Spidertrax. I was very cautious while installing them though... Cleaned the hub surface, each one fit perfectly on the hub-centric ring on the hub, and I centered the lug nuts in each hole and spun them in with my fingers. I uses vibra-tite on each stud, torqued them down, and verified torque after about 60 miles. I love these spacers so I hope they are not the cause!

Keep us posted on the test run without the spacers.

Did you install FJ spring only or the spring/strut combo? Sorry if I missed it somewhere - I read this thread twice.

I'd love to one day have mine just a little more level and I like what I'm hearing about the ride quality with the FJ swap. I just want a little lift in the front and possibly in the back. I plan to keep the factory size tire (my 5'2.5" wife isn't crazy about going higher).
 
@BurghRunner: I installed 2010 FJ coils on the 4Runner's stock XREAS shocks.

I have the SpiderTrax, also. Occasionally, I do get some vibration at those speeds but it's not all the time. To me, it doesn't feel like an unbalanced wheel more like driving on a rough/gravel road. I think I get the vibration at the same spots on some freeways - I just need to keep track. I use to have non hub-centric spacers on my Corolla and the car definitely had vibration.

Doozi, another question on your floors - do get scratches on your floor that grease or dirt get into it? When I clean the area, the scratches are barely visible. I got mine from Epoxy-Coat.com. I'm anal about my floors, too.
 
Good news! It seems that things are getting smoother! I ran it slowly up to 80mph along my usual route while paying attention to any vibration along the way. A slight front vibration right around 50-52mph and a slight right-rear vibration at about 70-72mph, both of which are much less than they were on Monday! It seemed great right after my alignment on Saturday, then by Tuesday it seemed to be pulling to the right, and today it was almost as straight as an arrow! It's odd but it seems to be "settling in"... everything as a whole feels a bit more at home on the Runner! Odd, I know, but it's hard to describe. The ride quality is getting even better!

@empty403 - the floor will be 3yrs old in June and is holding up great! A couple of light, surface scratches from sliding transmissions and engine stands around, but that's it. Cleans up easily, too! It's the Quikrete epoxy from Lowe's.

I also have a very slight vibration with the spidertrax at those speeds. It is not always there though, only sometimes it is more noticeable. I have noticed that it is only there when I am in 2wd. If I have it in 4wd, all is smooth all the time. For some reason it seems that having torque in the front drivetrain dampens it out.

P.S. Love the stance of your truck, it looks great!

Nice post! nice lift, and .... uhm by far the cleanest garage floor ive ever seen! better than a stealershiip's showroom floor.
 
Just an update...

Things have settled in nicely... still a little vibration here and there, but much better than a couple of weeks ago!

I was getting a substantial shake through the steering wheel between 54-60 mph and was starting to get irritated with it all. Last night, I decided to check the oil, tire pressure, etc. and found that my front tire pressures were off by 1.5psi... 32.5 right and 34 left. I adjusted them both to 33 psi and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Ran right up to 75mph this morning with just the slightest jiggle through the steering wheel in that 54-60 mph range.

I think that increasing the spring rate (stock to FJ springs) and moving the wheels outward (Spidertrax) while keeping the stock shocks has made the suspension a little more sensitive... more leverage acting on a firmer spring with the same damping. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the ride quality of this FJ spring set-up and it even has proven to be an improvement on washboards!!

4x4, they are the ones that make the most difference. They are taller and slightly more stiff than the 2wd. The 2wd FJ springs would be very similar to the OEM 4runner, not worth the time/money to swap them on IMO.
 
I haven't had any luck finding used fjc spring but JC WHITNEY has new replacement spring for about $100 for the front set. Does anybody have any experience with JCW springs?
 
I'm so relieved!!

Just had my tires re-balanced this weekend and ALL vibrations are gone!! I was really concerned that it was going to turn out to be caused by something with the FJ coils or the Spidertrax so, while I did my 5-tire rotation, I checked the torque of every bolt that I touched during the install and found that everything was secure. It turns out that I had one tire out of balance and one with a significantly higher road force reading than the others. The ride is as smooth as glass now! :driving:
