Double Decker Cargo w Net Option

Is this Double Decker cargo shelf with net thing an option that is actually installed in the new truck, or is it just some crap that the dealer slides in your cargo area and charges you $250 extra?
I don't want one, but am looking at a 2006 that has one. I'm buying long distance, so I haven't yet seen the truck.
But I'll soon be haggling over the phone, and would like to tell the dealer to take the DD w net out and cut another $250 off the price.
What do you think?

It's a factory option, not port or dealer installed. If the truck has one, it's installed at the factory. The cargo area is slightly different between a truck with the DD and one without. The wheel wells are different to support shelf and area behind the wheels are plastic. You can remove the shelf yourself, but you would need a filler piece that's $100+.

I doubt the dealer will remove the DD for you and give you the cost of the option back (btw, DD is standard on the Limited). It's almost like asking them to remove the spoiler or roof rack on a SR5. On my '90 Toyota truck, the dealer offered a $400 refund if I didn't want A/C, but charged $800 to put one in if the truck didn't have it. A/C was an option back then and most didn't come with it.

I actually use the DD quite often. I know the retractable shade works well too but I put stuff under the DD and that way its out of site, out of mind. I guess it depends on how much crap you like to haul around in your truck!

As they said, it won't come out easily, and it won't be pretty once it's gone without doing some carpet work. Good luck on getting your new truck soon.

I believe it depends on one's own, personal situation.
Having two elderly parents one of which has to use a walker and oxygen tank, the cargo net and double decker are BOTH PRICELESS.

When towing, the double decker also comes in handy to keep tools, towing supplies, car covers, trailer jack blocks, etc. organized.

The double decker can also be used to hide gifts from nieces and nephews who like to snoop around their uncle's 4RUnner.

I use mine all the time, but it seems that I'm in the minority. Under the shelf I keep tools and various supplies. Then when out and about, I put my latest acquisitions on the shelf or between the shelf and hatch.

Clearly a case of YMMV.

The DD is a neat thing for the dealer to show you on the lot. but really can't be used for anything.

when i first bought my Runner, I tried putting stuff on top of it. Which promptly all fell off as soon as I started driving.

It would be better if it had a lip or something to stop things from sliding off.

I always feel like a minority when I read about the DD because I LOVE it!

Basically, if you don't like it fold it down and it is gone. If you do need it, it gives nearly double the load floor! I have waaaay to many things that I pack which cannot be "crushed" by cargo on top of it. There is no way, when I pack for the lake, that I could do what I do without DD (coolers, clothes, dry foods, chainsaw, fuel, and on and on...then all the baby stuff!!!).

As far as the sliding problem goes: I went to princess auto and purchased a large piece of rubberized foam. Kind of the "mac tack" stuff aka the stuff people often put in kitchen shelves, but heavy duty. It cost $5, and NOTHING slides around now.

Another item I love is the rear cargo net - the one that is "envelope style" that goes across the rear of the cargo space. Great for keeping things in when you open the hatch, or great for holding so many items. One favourite of mine is putting 2L's of milk in it and they stay upright for the ride home.

J
