Doug Thorley headers for 5TH Gens

Congrats on the header install...what kind of muffler are you running with your system?

I had my tail-pipe cut off at the rear hanger and a right angle pipe installed, welded into place so it exits out the side of the truck. It was only a $30 job at the muffler shop and isn't quite as tucked in close to the rear wheel as I would like, but it looks nice, clean and factory. The funny thing is, once this was done it actually solved some of the droning inside the truck. I wonder if this changed the harmonics of the system? I am still getting some thick undercoating done in the morning.

Final note, Gadget sent me a replacemet O2 simulator, despite testing my other one and not finding any issues, and since I re-installed the replacement I have had zero issues with ECU codes. Truck is running great now!

Great to hear. I am running a magnaflow muffler. Today I actually had a new y-pipe made that eliminates the other two cats (for off road use only). It a little louder still now, but man it runs smooth. I love it. I also had them route that driver sides pipe a lot higher up than stock so its not going to get banged on a rock :) With the headers, new y-pipe and muffler I am very pleased with the results!!!

possible to get a sound clip?

Sorry man. I dont have a real video camera, and everything I have tried with my phone, or my still camera just turns out to be junk. You cant hear anything and its a waste of time. Sorry, if I had a way to do it, I certainly would.

:

I love URD's products but I would not run their supercharger if I were you on your truck. Its not made to hit the dirt. The X-Runners do great with them and put down 400 rwhp on the STREET with all the extra goodies.

The URD Systems actually do very well off road. The new Mk3 versions are compatible with snorkel systems.

Are there any options for intakes for the gen5's? I put doug thorley headers on my pathfinder and even tho it sounds good and drives better, I'm not sure if its worth chasing down CEL every few weeks.... but I did notice the biggest difference after headers & exhaust was to add a pop charger.... :D:lasercannon: anyone have any luck with this? I think this engine has potential it just needs MOAR.

URD has the their own headers for the 5th gen that are equal length long tubes along with the sim to keep the check engine light off. URD also stocks the DT and JBA headers for your truck in short and long tube

URD will have DT and JBA headers for the 2013 5th gen very soon. URD will be the first to get those.

Farty mufflers and headers are usually an attempt at trying to design a vehicle better than a manufacturer under the mindset that if modern technology can improve on a 1950s era engine the same can be true of a modern vehicle.

Performance gains are imaginary.

If Toyota could get their MPG up by just changing out the headers, they would.

Partly true. Performance gains with long tube headers come from increased flow efficiency, and removing the front cats. A guy could also have a new y pipe put on, since ours represent yet another bottleneck and a low hanging point on the underbody. Problem is urd is the only game in town (with obscene shipping costs to Canada :( ), and custom work is stupidly expensive for the few hp gained.

So curious, question for anyone with these headers over the last few years... I live in NC, are there any inspection issues if I install these? I'm assuming they fit a 2015. Not looking for magic, but always curious about possible gains. Still disappointed the TRD Supercharger was never released, so curious about other tweaks.

I'm coming from a '04 F350 Turbo Diesel I drove for 10 years with straight pipes off the turbo that didn't require emission inspections, so not sure about the current state of inspections for gas engines. The price seems fair for these though!

Thanks!

LOL, that is just wrong. Not to sound completely rude, but you must no have any experience modifying modern NA engines.

The gains are very real if done properly. Been there done that at least 100 times with dyno and track times to prove it.

I will pretty much agree with you on most cat back systems and shorty headers, but LT header gains are for real and there is much science to back up up. Do some research. MFGs can't do it for packaging, durability, cost, and emissions reasons.

Inspections vary by state, I doubt you would have any issues. The pup cats only function as a catalyst during cold starts.
Not sure if they fit a 2015 as air injection was introduced at some point. They would need to have a port for that.

URD has headers with air injection. You have to be careful that you are getting the correct thing though.

I laughed reading this.

On chevy LS engines gain almost 50rwhp with a full exhaust and this guys says they do nothing.

Mainly emissions

Very true, mainly emissions though. Toyota has realized they save money by making internationally sold vehicles meet every emissions standard for everywhere they are sold, had an MR2 Spyder that gained nearly 10% on the dyno after removing the header cats. Japan and Europe have way stricter stds than the US.

The other thing to look at is that Toyota's generic goals for this engine may be different than an individuals intended purpose. Toyota is selling more of these to soccer dads than they are to off road enthusiasts. HP lost in back pressure is an easy gain plus the Y-pipe without cats improves both flow and clearance. I wouldn't do this on my daily commuter due to noise and emissions pollution but on an off road toy it sure makes sense.

Mostly agree with you. The others are mostly delusional LOL. They have not tried getting more power out of a Toyota. Not much there without cracking the ECU. Sure you may get 20 hp at 6000+ rpm but end up with less power in the rpm range most people normally drive. You can easily get more power out of a Ford or LS but not the case with the Toyota.

That being said, it still is fun to mod stuff and even more fun to fool yourself. Just my opinion. Hell I have an Afe cold air intake and I think it was a good investment. Would not recommend it to a friend but I still like it. To each his own.

A properly designed and motor matched LT header will provide noticeable power gains throughout the power band. Not just at max RPM. Log style manifolds just can't provide the same level of scavenging.

However, I will agree with you that the locked Toyota POS ECU could still be a kill joy with TQ mgt.... In general, the MAF does a fine job metering the increased airflow for this type of modification, but if there are too many power protection mechanisms in the ECU, it still won't be able to take advantage of the additional HP potential.

I agree that the LS series engines are amazing with tons of great aftermarket support... They respond to cheap low cost modifications better than almost anything else, but all mfgs have learned lessons and followed on so much of that design. I'm sure the 1GRFE has a good amount of power potential just begging to be unleashed. The question is whether or not the ECU would ever let it happen. Only someone like URD could elaborate with facts for this platform.

Just think about it for a second. You no longer have a throttle cable. The ECU basically does whatever the heck it wants, your just telling it what you would like and it can ignore you and all other inputs. If I remember correctly, Toyota had some pretty serious flaws in their early fly by wire stuff. http://online.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424127887324669104578203440990704994 a 3.1 billion dollar mistake.
