DOWNPOUR11's Build Thread

damnit, why is everyony sas'n their rigs.... :frusty: :censored: :yell:  :mmph:

My reasons may be different from the other guys, but I wanted simplicity. I have an 01, so everything on my truck was electronic. After every actuator failing on me I decided to take the plunge. I now have manual locking hubs, a mechanical shift, gear driven transfer case and a cable operated rear locker. I haven't eliminated failure, but I made it easier to diagnose and repair in less-than-perfect situations.

LOL not in the lead yet - I haven't even started. I still have to chop my IFS off. Those axles are under my buddy's truck right now. Next week I'll be starting. Just swapping everything over. But, I'm not touching the transfer case, I just need to get the axles and links under there and get rolling. Down the road I'll be putting in duals. You'll be done first since you're only doing a front SAC.

Do tacobox is in the mix??? Why don't you get a lefty instead and run a 4.7 low. Then you can can double it later with a 2.28. Personal preference I guess. Could go all out and go Atlas 4sp 10.8 :D

No problem, just throw some cash my way. Let me know if you want my paypal account address :D

It will happen, just not immediately lol

Dous Soooooo close!! But it works. They cycled it, everything clears. They said it was a really tight fit, but they got it to work. The axle is also pitched at 6 degrees for driveshaft angle IIRC. Of course Drew's truck is not at ride height. It will be about 6" taller than how it's currently sitting.

OK - need some input Dirtco slowpoke99 Rockdawg84

I emailed ORI, and their CNC machines are down. They have a 10+ week lead time. I talked to my fabricator today and even 8 weeks is too long. It should already be done by then. I don't want to be paying for a shop bay to work, and just have the truck sitting there waiting for ORI's once we're done with everything else. I'm very disappointed as these ORI's would have worked perfect. I wouldn't need to run air bumps or a stabilizer bar, that's just more damn money. Tomorrow I will call a few of their dealers, but I highly doubt they have any in stock.

We will be weighing each corner of the truck to determine spring rates... I guess I just won't run a stabilizer bar if I can get the correct spring rates and dial in the c/o's.

I guess I need some coil over recommendations. I'll be using Eibach springs regardless. Tried and true.

Help! :sadwave:

I at least found a spring rate thread (permalink to Scotty's): http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyota-truck-4runner/1014510-coilovers-guys-spring-rate-thread.html#post13488186

that sucks to hear! are you gonna hold out and still get the ORI's and just put something under your rig temporarily until they get them to you or are you seeking a permanent alternative for the ORI's? temporarily, i'd try and source a set of fox 2.0's for now just to get it out of the shop and running. not sure about your area but around here they pop up on craigslist pretty cheap all the time. if you're looking for something permanent, i personally would go with a dual rate king setup. but that's just me!

have you cycled the suspension to see what you can fit under there as far as travel length?

I'm thinking permanently. The suspension has been cycled on Drew's 4runner (my buddy I bought the axles from). The 14" are too much for the front, since neither of us are going to move all the crap above the fenderwell. So, I'll be running 12" c/o's in the front and 14" c/o's in the rear.

I've scoured everything up here and haven't found shit. I can't afford to take a loss on a temporary fix then switch them for the ORI's whenever they arrive.

I have no problem running spring coilovers, I just didn't want to drop more money on bumps.

I was looking at Kings, FOA, Fox, Radflow, SAW... lol see my problem here? It will be a dual rate, resi, 2.5

i see your dilemma! unfortunately the kings and fox's are the only coilover systems that i have any real world experience with and i know there are a few others out there that i can't comment on or recommend.

not fair you link guys get to get to shop for cool s*** while i sit in my shop deciding wether or not i wanna pull a leaf or change out the whole spring pack.:violin:

:lmao: :lmao:

Dude my stomach has been in a knot all week and will continue til this build is done. I shouldn't have pulled the money to do this. I was going to pull it to fix all the broken IFS shit on my truck, which I still couldn't afford. Then I realized I'd just be breaking it again and again, then got really angry and said f&$# it, SAS. I've been in a daze.

i'm sure it'll all work out man. it's just one of those things we gotta deal with when we decide to take on these types of builds. but the first time you hit the trail, i'm sure all the pain will go away!

I honestly prefer the idea of using coil-overs compared to the ORI's. The ORI's are sweet, but at least with coil overs there is a mechanical part holding the vehicle up, even if you blow a seal or lose your nitrogen. I also feel (could be wrong though) that a coil over will have more tune-ablity and adjust-ablity than the ORI's (but more time consuming).

If your concerned about the cost of fancy ($$$) bump stops you could always run these, then upgrade to the real deal down the road if needed. For a rockcrawler I bet these would work fine, they are progressive rate and the same size as an air bump.

If your sold on the ORI's I would keep wheeling the crap out of your truck and keep collecting parts, maybe even build a rear bumper :D (JK)! Once you get all the big ticket items in (including the ORI's), then you can start cutting. I would not try to set up the suspension without them, there is just too many variables that come into play when setting up a link suspension and you do not want to do it twice. Also, just because they say 10 weeks does not mean you will have them in 10 weeks. It could be the middle of winter before you see them!

I've now scrapped the ORI idea LOL. I'm not waiting for them. The time is now to get this all done. Everything is ready to go in. Oil pan and frame plates will be here next week, links are already done, brackets are already done for the most part. I'll get the driveshafts made when I'm ready.

Still trying to figure out what brand C/O to run. I'm still doing a bit more research on these so I'll come up with something.

I just paid for the axles right now.... and I desperately need a drink lol

Oh and don't worry, a rear bumper is in store for the truck.... along with a full internal cage. :D

Mmmmkay, going to run the 14" FOA 2.0 Remote Reservoir Coilovers w/ Eibach Springs. Will order springs once we weigh each corner of the truck.

nice choice! i was on their site last night looking for a replacement for the bilsteins i'm currently using. they came with my sas kits so i'lll run them till at least the end of our hunting season. hopefully by then you'll be able to give me a little feedback on them.

any updated pics of your build?

Haven't started the build yet. Clearing space for my truck next week in the shop, then I will start hacking away.

Yeah I read a lot of good reviews on the FOA's, and they're cheap.... er than all the other coilovers LOL and seem to be great quality.

Ordered frame plates, oil pan and hardware, and the ARB compressor. Next week will be fun!!

They didn't seem all that much cheaper than the King's once you buy springs

I see you ended up going 14", despite previous concerns, why the change?
