DOWNPOUR11's Build Thread

Here I take off on a 5 day trip up in Alturas, and figured Rob would be done with his SAS.

WRONG, yeah we know, doing a complete mod over, there will always be complications and never go together the way we think, boy does that sound familiar.

But, still waiting the final out come. Rob, she looks great so far and will be worth the time and money invested in the long run. You will be able to enjoy all the fruits and labor cause of it.

Thanks Leonard! Sam will be done with his swap soon too, we all need to do a another camping trip before snow hits. I talked to Jon yesterday and he said he's been swamped with work and doesn't know when he'll get another free weekend anytime soon. I'm going to the Marlin Round-Up 13-15th, but after that, I'm free Friday's-Sundays. Let me know!

Sound good to me, will need a local camp out before winter. My oldest daughter moved to Alturas and I'm making monthly runs up there. Lot's of mountians up there to camp, but a long drive.

I'll hit Frank up on this, he's always game, and let you know.

Damn that's up in the corner. Mapquest says 4 hours from me. If you have a spot worth going, I'm game, but it might be pretty far for Sam and the rest of the guys.

I had emailed profender and just got a response. I'm gonna order some 12" springs right now... you think I should bump it up to 250# or just up the valving with a 12" 200#?

For all 12" coilovers we recommend using 12" uppers and 14" lowers. It sounds to me like the upper springs are 2" too short and maybe a tad light if I am reading correctly. If the upper coil is compressed 50% of the spring at ride height I would recommend upping the upper coil to a 12" 250# spring. Upping the nitrogen charge will add a little ride height but not solve the issue of the short springs.

I hope this helps out, If you have any other questions please feel free to ask away.

Thanks

Well he is right about the spring length for sure. I just did the math and with a 250# spring your gonna be sitting at 2.25 preload for 5" of shaft showing.

But I would take his advice and go with a 12" 250. If you put a 200# 10" on there then you maybe gonna take your preload to between 3 - 4. If you go 250# 12" you could probably get that number closer to 2" of preload

Ok cool that's exactly what I was thinking... that I would still be preloading it too much with a 200# coil per your numbers. Ordering right meow. Thanks man!

Started the day off running around with the IFS box visiting a couple hydraulic shops trying to get the right fittings and hose etc to get my power steering hooked up. Turns out my stock PS h/p sending line bolted right into the IFS box. We first looked at the box female end and it appeared to not have a taper, so I was looking for an adapter... turns out there was just some gunk in there throwing us off and it was tapered all along... lol.

Went to class, then back to the shop and hooked up front brakes... didn't bypass the ABS and I bought some stainless lines and hooked everything up.

I'm prepared for the flaming/you can't do that/I told you so comments but my newbie self doesn't see a problem with the stock PS lines, and as long as they bolt right up it SHOULD be fine, given they are high pressure lines as well... but hey, if it breaks or craps out, I will have lived and learned. Also with not bypassing the ABS, my friend with his 2000 4runner didn't bypass his and has had absolutely no problems... so I'm hoping for the best for now, but will upgrade to a GM 1 1/8" master cylinder soon and follow ErikB's writeup and parts list.

I now hate u-joints BTW. More specifically Borgeson 9/16x36 spline 1"DD u-joints that mate to the steering column. I went to pop it on and no bueno. It seemed just a tiny bit small. "Shit I ordered the wrong size." So I run across the street to a shop 15 minutes after close and he waved me to come in. He gives me a 5/8's and says to go try it and he'll be over with a caliper to measure. Way too big. My spline counts are right and my measurements are right but the damn thing will not go on. He runs back to his shop and grabs a different splined u-joint, that obviously doesn't work. So, 2 hours later using a hammer and a long piece of steel through the firewall out through the front of the truck, and about 20 whacks later, the u-joint is on for good. There is no way I'm getting this thing off... ever. It's ready to drive tomorrow... with no cat of course, maybe I'll cut it and reposition it tomorrow but I just want to get the truck driving right now so find any major tweaks.

Tomorrow I will bleed the brakes, load up the steering fluid, top off diffs, check bolts and driveshaft bolts, put the battery in, and hope for the best.

Also, ARB stainless lines came in today and the replacement front coils will be in tomorrow. I'll swap the coils out and get it to ride height.

Uhhhh WTF have I been missing Rob?!!? I saw one of your posts in another thread and noticed some weird "5.13" gears in your sig and was like, huuhhhh? Clicked on your build thread and now I see this! Holy shit batman, this is AWESOME. Congratulations on officially making me wish I still had my 3rd gen and had started cutting it up. I have a truck boner right now. thanks. lol

LOL! Thanks man! Yeah... it's getting an overhaul. Trying to get it driving today.

I'm sure I missed it somewhere along the way but what did you do for your front brake lines. Mine will be slightly different because they will be going to a 7/16 chevy banjo bolt on the axle side but I thought you might have a good idea.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with running the brakes through the ABS. You have no sensors so therefor it will never know if your wheels are spinning or not. Just pull the ABS fuse but I have a better idea for you. Take your ABS sensors and cut the sensor off strip the wire back and then measure the resistance. Then solder in the equivalent resistors and your good to go. You have now officially tricked the computer into thinking your ABS is still there. Plus you won't have dangling cords or excess. Just and idea.

As well I see nothing wrong with using the hoses you are for the steering. Hell they break and then your just in for some super hard steering and then you can upgrade there but a hydraulic line is a hydraulic line.

Can't wait to see this thing at full flex :)

I'm crossing my fingers!

Sadly, it's not driving tonight lol... coulda been but we were really tired. I had a couple classes all day and I got rear ended on the way to class in the morning.

Person in front of me was stopped for a pedestrian, I stopped behind that car, a girl stops behind me, then the guy behind her hit the gas instead of the brakes. Their cars were very damaged, the crappy newer Saab I was driving didn't have a scratch. BUT - what do you do in an accident with a hot girl? Ask her out, so now we're hanging out Friday and she's riding shotgun on the 4runner's maiden voyage up to high lakes this weekend. She also grew up right next to Rubicon too. LOL friggin awesome.

All I did was measure he length I needed at full droop (which was an extra 2 feet), so I bought 2 lines just a little longer (to be safe) of stainless line - BUT factor in the length of your fittings too, so in the end the new line with both fittings attached was 26". One end has a ford fitting and the other end has a toyota fitting. Then you'll need the tabs. I used 2 of each on both sides to get it snug. You can see in the pic where the stainless line bolts to the stock toyota line on the frame. I bought two of the mounts, one will be welded to the frame about where it sits in the pic, then the other will be welded to the axle to keep it out of the way of the coilover. Then you can see the shim in there too, I used one on each mount. You can see I took a hammer to the mount/tab I that was in my hand to flatten it. Whatever works best. All in all it was around $70.

Ok awesome that's reassuring. I already ripped out the ABS lines anyway so they're not there anymore. I'll pull the fuse in the morning. Thanks man! I swapped those upper coils today and they made a world of difference!!

So yeah, today was: car accident ---> hot girl ---> school ----> shop, swap front coils ---> school ---> shop, finish steering shaft/make sure steering turns even left to right ---> home. Didn't have time for shit.

All I gotta do in the morning is bleed brakes and start it up.... oh shit I need to grind the rear panhard mount too lol... I'll write a note to myself.

Oh hell yeah now that is exactly how you do it lol well played good sir ;)

Yeah yours doesn't have that hydro brake bullsh*t that the 01-02 have hence why going LT and not SAS. But you'll be fine. What did your preload end up being with the 12" 250#??? Just kinda curious about that.

Rough schedule but hell the random hot girl is always a plus ;)

P.S. sticky notes are your best friend :D

The preload was four fingers..... lol ongoing form of measurement during this build "what does it measure on the other side?" "A thumb and a half!" "How much now?" "Four fingers!"

Anyway, I put it at 2.5". It's looking so much better than before. I might adjust it when I put the tires back on because I'm going to bump up the rear height too.

Nah, super easy schedule but it just sucks because I'll be in the middle of something on the truck then have to immediately leave for class.

Ha ha that is a good measurement I would say. I have done it that way a few times just because the measurement Didnt need to be precise.

Yeah true about needing it on its own weight to really know. What was your belly height again???

It was at 23" on 37's. Shooting for 25-26". We built it to be at 25-26", so I'll have some room to play.. I want to drive it so bad lol it's gonna be so much better than before.
