DOWNPOUR11's Build Thread

it seems like such a long time ago... lol...

awesome build/truck, prop's to you keeping it going. I freaking love it. can't wait to see it in action again... ether in person some day or only online...

:offtopic:
so I have a friend that hasn't been off-roading for a while (sold his 4x4 years ago) and now wants back in... he is looking for an abused $800 toy that he can make his own but he is afraid of high mileage... I sent him this thread and he's stoked to look for a toyota as a toy with any mileage now.

Haha thanks man. Just getting to the point where the whole truck needs to be rebuilt anyway. I was planning on tons down the road, but this fell into my lap now so I jumped on it.

He should be able to find one in AZ if he just wants to find something to build. I used to see Paisas hauling old Toyota pickups back to Mexico all the time. Have him look for an oldie with a 22RE and start there or just be patient and find something somewhat built for like $3k.

downpour11 ... we need a slogan for you... "400k+ miles? no problem. keep buildin!"

lol yup I'm at 441k now. Only recent stuff I did was valve cover gaskets, plugs, wires, new alternator, new battery then axle seals front and rear. Trying to not put any more money into it before I rebuild it. When the engine decides to take a shit I'm just going to drop in another 3.4L. I would like to do a 5.3, but Cali just sucks for emissions so I'm not going to touch it. Maybe I can find a supercharger when that all happens.

So here is the taco I bought for my GF.

Specs: 1999 Tacoma, 5speed, 121k miles, Ford kingpin 60 up front with 5.38's and a spool, trussed 14bolt rear with a Detroit and 5.38's, brand new 35" Nitto Trail Grapplers on H2's, bobbed bed. OME Dakar leafs up front, 63's in the rear, Deouchtech Shocks (Douchetech, they suck, need replacing) $6500.

Picked it up in Nevada last month. It's been a bit ridiculous to get this thing dialed in but I'm still happy with the purchase - or, I will be LOL. My friends are calling it the "Dried Up Bloody Taco", and I'm also calling it "Needs Nothing!" because that's what it stated in the ad. LOL

Here's the apparent definition of "Needs Nothing!" and what I have had to do to it in the past month...

Timing belt/water pump (water pump pulley bearing was bad and nothing had ever been replaced)

New radiator. This guy must've let this truck sit for a long time. Overheated on us 8 times on the way back to Chico.

He installed a ram and drilled and tapped for hydro assist, yeah it works, except he never swapped in a bigger pump, the OEM pump could not keep up, so you would lose steering at times. So I installed a new 1600psi PSC pump with the big gangster reservoir. Steers excellent now. For some reason the PO had the bright idea of mounting the steering cooler UNDER the front bumper completely exposed.....yeah.... that needs to be changed. Also the PO used a flux core welder to weld the steering ram onto the pumpkin...that's cracked.

The bumpers and sliders.....hardcore hackjob. They are all getting chopped off and it's getting a full cage done very nicely.

There is no front driveshaft. He could not tell me why, but no big deal to me. Looking more at the truck when I got home, there never was a driveshaft. The front crossmember is untouched, so someone SAS'd the truck, but never put in a driveshaft. Ok. Now I look at the 60. It's smiling at me. So what is really in this KP 60? Has a blown drivers side hub too. Makes me wonder if there is even a spool or 5.38's in it. Whatever, I will get to that after I drop the axle and have it re-tubed!! LOL it's bent on the long and short sides.

Diff fluid in the 14 bolt is black. That is getting changed asap.

Cyl1 Misfire, so I just did plugs and wires.

Fighting the truck to get smogged, it will pass fine, but OBD2 says "not associated" because the ECU hasn't relearned the gearing, so I'm doing a drive cycle to get it to register. But it's annoying because drive cycle states "Drive 55mph for 3min, then 35-45mph open throttle for 15min." That is harder than it looks with traffic and stop lights!! lol 15 min is a long time to drive 35mph straight without slowing down. I think I found a farm road I can do this on today. And this has to be done with the OBD2 showing how fast the engine thinks we are going which is all over the place.

ANYWAY. Once everything is all gravy and to my liking it will be awesome and treat us well for a long time.

Future plans - duals. That's about it right now lol. Getting this truck dialed and she can drive it for a while til my re-build is done then I'll start throwing money back into it for her. I really want to link it in the future just using a 4WU kit.

dude, if I could get my girlfriend to drive a truck like that, I would probably marry her. But I cant, so I probably wont.

Hahaha oh man don't show her that comment.

She's in an '03 S10 right now. A/C has been broke for 2 years, traced it to a bad condenser after replacing the pump and accumulator twice. I'm not letting her dump a G-bar into a $3k 2wd truck. She wanted a Tacoma anyway and I saw this one pop up on pirate and picked it up the next day just because it was such a good deal. Though, I knew it was someone else's project.

She loves wheeling but she's scared, so it's kind of a win-win for us since I can now trick out a Tacoma and we now have two dependable trucks to wheel. So I'll teach her how to drive and I'll get to wheel the Taco while I do haha.

I'm still laughing that I talked her into daily driving a taco on tons with a detroit in the rear hahaha. She will get used to it.

***loves wheeling after I took her to hammers and her first real wheeling experience ever was going up Sledgehammer in my buddy's rig hahahaha

have no fear, I try to show her stuff on here every now and then but she has less than zero interest in the automotive interwebz. its basically trashy reality tv or nothing.

thats awesome she likes to wheel and is committed to building some skills. I just watched a youtube video of Sledgehammer, thats a gnarly trail! my girlfriend likes to wheel with me, but the only time she has ever been at the controls was getting down after a bonfire party where I was apparently in a drinking competition with myself. she did well but didn't enjoy the stress factor. first and last time in the driver seat.

I had a lifted GMC 2500 with a similar hydro assist problem. When I hit the brakes the power steering would go out, and trying to control a 6,500lb truck with no power was a real motherf*cker. talk about a friggin liability.

That truck looks like a badass project. you gonna post the build here, or maybe a taco forum?

Nah, I'll just post pics of it here when something visually appealing gets finished on it lol Nothing really special about it and it'll still be a street queen anyway.

Like flames on the hood and some sort of tribal pinstriping?

lol flames are way too hardcore. I like the tribal pin striping idea though with some trick chrome fender lips. Might also have to pick up some new tow mirrors and make some custom streamers for them. It would be mad-bro-ish and all the bro's up here would think we are cool and might even bro-down with us. :)

:toilet:

bro-down. I love it.

don't forget to get a custom sticker with your last name in gothic lettering for the rear cab window.

also thinking you should step down a tire size or two. just imagine the new trend...

serious potential.

Great buy man! I broke stuff every time I wheeled on built toy axles on my pickup, but never quite made it to tons before I posted it for sale. Good to see this build still going. It was always one of my favorites.

Thanks dude. Kinda fell into this - was planning on a Jimmy's buggy but I couldn't pass these axles up as they were at my feet. At least it'll be unsprung weight. After this re-build, I'd love to do a 5.3L but I hate California smog laws, so I might just swap another 3.4L and scavenge a supercharger that isn't $3k when this engine shits the bed. It already hates hills with the axles I have now. 445k now.

you know that the E-Rod motor is cali emissions legal straight from GM. HeHe. only 8k for the motor and then getting the rest of the drive train under there with it. but you now have the axles to handle 400+hp. :target::target:

Damn man. I want a Jimmy's buddy so damn bad. One of my buddies has a built one and two of my other buddies just each picked up their finished chassis and are collecting parts. Do it man. Any thoughts of cutting one up? Kinda like a doved/bobbed rear end with no hatch?

K this is about to begin again -

Just ordered:

(5) KMC Machete Crawl beadlocks, satin black (don't care about the matching spare, I bought these in a package and it was cheaper lol)
Rest of my steering stuff minus heims (PSC 8" 1.75" ram, resi)
Yukon hardcore hubs

(2) 14" Radflo 2.0 resi w/90 degree fittings (I already have two) with custom tune and some PAC springs from Brian at 4WU
(4) 2" stroke Radflo bumps and cans

60 is at my friends shop getting gears and zip locker setup.
14 bolt is ready to go.

Sitting down with my friend this week to get the transfer case ordered. Still planning on a NW Fab blackbox to Ford NP205, triple sticks

Had to replace Johnny Joints a month ago, so I have all new Currie joints

Will still be running 7075 aluminum links.

Need to pick out tires, I'm too picky on this. Would like a 40x13.5R17 or a 41x13.5R17. Really leaning towards the PBR, heavy... not into the 40" MTR's from the sidewall issues my friends have with them. Impartial on the Nitto trail grips...I can get em, but I'd like something different. And thats where I run out of options. No KM2's, no Iroks, no swampers... LOL hey if BFG TA KX's weren't $950ea I'd be all over 'em.

BTW - this truck is for sale. Come get it for $8,000. I'll give you a new cat and an AC clutch, go smog it and figure out the front axle, put a front driveshaft in and go. Will also give you the phone number to a friend in sac to retube the 60 for like $300. I'm over it. It runs great now!!

GF went and got an 01 DC taco, 3.4L, 4wd etc. Friggin torque converter goes out a month later, ruins the tranny, had to put a new one in. LOL time to at least recoup something.
