Drive shaft noise or U joint noise (LEXUS 4/06 TSB page 18) aka Driveshaft thump/bump

Thanks for your input.

Question 1: Are the GX470 TSB parts directly compatible with the 4Runner? (I thought the parts are exactly the same).

Question 2: Any idea how much the parts will cost? (Is it a new driveshaft and something else?)

Question 3: Isn't anyone surprised that a 2007 model that I bought just a few months ago doesn't have the new driveshaft? I thought this was fixed at the factory now, but maybe only for Lexus vehicles?

Answer 1: I would think so, but i have no proof to show you. You may check with your local Toyota parts department...of course, it would suck if Toyota and Lexus uses different parts number.

Answer 2: No idea. It's a new driveshaft and control arms. Check back a few pages for a link to the TSB.

Answer 3: This is very surprising that an '07 still has this problem. I do know that the new GX in '07 does not have this problem (or at least none reported). I do know that the TSB fix is a PERMANENT fix.

I've tried to convince Toyota, through my dealership's servie manager and his regional tech rep, to try using Krytox, and/or get me the Lexus parts. No go.

The summary was that the best way to get Toyota moving on the issue was financial pain... A new driveshaft is not cheap!

I don't expect a fix, but I'll ask for a new one every six months or so.

Well, I sure hope they are able to fix mine. I'm a lawyer, so if they try to pack grease to fix the problem and it keeps coming back I'll sue them under lemon law.

Again, I am really surprised (and disappointed) my 2007 is suffering from this. Ugh.

That is actually not that bad. If the Lexus driveshaft that fixes the problem is the same amount I may fix this myself.

driveshaft clunk

well... i just got my driveshaft replaced yesterday at my local toyota dealer under powertrain warranty. lucky for me, the master tech working on my t4r is also a good friend of mine, and i was able to watch while he replaced it.

the new driveshaft out of the box is completely dry, no grese at all. so he shoved a load of extreme pressure moly graph grease made by sta-lube into the splined part of the drive shaft.

i drove the piss out of the truck and slammed on the brakes at times causing abs to come on and no clunks, or noise.

for now, it seems like there's no problems and the noise is fixed.

i'll keep everybody posted on the driveshaft if it starts clunking again. thanks for everyones input on this subject.

I love my 4runner. Only wish this clunking wasn't soo annoying.

Now that the new Tundra came out. I have another reason of wanting to get rid of this 4runner.

I am gettin real FED UP with this clunking. Can you please layout the lemon law.

I want to get the ball rolling. I am taking my 4runner to toyota this weekend to file my first complain.

I want to do this by the book. Should toyota decides to play the run around games.

Driveshaft replaced under warranty

I had the replacement driveshaft put in Wednesday. I did some hard stops around the dealership lot, and I didn't get any clunks. We took a long drive in the snow - nothing extreme - Seattle residents are not too snow savvy... and we didn't hear anything.

I picked up a tip on the splines - a guy doing BMW clutches recommended lapping the splines with some fine valve lapping compound. I figured 800 - 1200 grit. I asked the service rep to do this, and left notes in the car for the tech. They said they did it! I also asked for the good EP grease to be loaded up into the splines before reassembly.

If this doesn't work, I will lap the splines with some 600 grit, and then plate them with electroless nickel with teflon. That should help!

I haven't spent the bucks for Krytox. I'm hoping moly-graph is good enough...

Still no trouble

It's been 10 days without any noise now. I've seen posts where people say that the clunk came back after a few thousand miles, so I'm still in a 'wait and see' mode... I've put about 1000 miles of mixed city and highway driving on it so far.

My most recent lubrication lasted about 1/2 mile. I now get the clunk taking my foot off the brake when the light turns green. I can't remember the last time I got the thump in the rear after stopping for the light.

Oddly, nobody there ever heard of the Lexus TSB. Their position and understandably so is that until Toyota tells them different, they are going to keep on lubing driveshafts. Now if someone can come up with an idea to make this a safety issue, we might get some action

FYI: The local guy (Jon) has asked to take a try at it, and he has a regional fellow coming in next week that he will talk to. I told him that there's been many looking at the issue, but it never hurts!
