:iagree:

I have the same problem..... And it's not my brake calipers. I'm not an expert I'm sure it's not brakes! It's started about 2000 miles ago and i have only 10k miles on my 4r !!! I think I feel it more often then before so I hope something will break sooner or later because if i go to dealer right now probably I will hear same story as some of You......for example "it is normal" or mechanic won't be able to feel anything.....
Is any of You by any chance got rid of this problem for good? i wonder how bad is it after a year of driving with this clunk.

grease your zerts every OCI and it will wear in and go away. I have 15K miles and mine never clunks anymore.

My '03 now has 18,000 miles and still thumps. I get the slip yoke liberally greased at every oil change (3000 miles). It thumps more softly right after the lubing, and gets more intense as I approach time for the next oil change.

Thanks for an update. So there is no other way that just accept it and live with it.....The question is how am I going to do that

Can't be fixed, grease it and let it wear in, works on most of them but I guess some people still have problems. My 95 Landcruiser had the thump and still had it every once in a while even at 130K miles. It did not cause any problem. Live with it or trade it.

How common is this clunking drivetrain problem?

It comes at no additional charge :) Just have it lubed at oci and let it wear in. It will get better until it will be so rare you will not notice it. If you are anal, then you will be stressed out. It will never cause a mechanical problem.

thump

im so fawkin pissed about this problem.....

any updates..???? or TSSBs?

i havent greased anything, and from what Im reading, it comes back so why waste time/money?

Don't know if this is the same problem or not

My 4 runner also does the clunk thing when you let go of the brakes. However, my does it when I shift from reverse to drive. Sometimes, after the shift to drive, the car doesnt move. I have to give it some gas and then I hear a loud clunk and then it moves forward.

Other times after I brake, when I let go of the brakes it doesn't move, I'll have to give it some gas to get it going and it always clunks in this case.

I have found that if my car doesnt move after I let go of the brake, if I shift to neutral then back to drive it will move without the clunk.

I've found that it only happens in the first few minutes I drive the car, like leaving my garage and at the first couple of stop lights. Once I'm out, it doesn't happen for the rest of the day.

Nobody here has mentioned it happening after a shift. Do I have the same clunking problem?

BTW, mine is a 99 runner with 80k miles and this just started happening a month ago. I think a small clunk was there before, but it was noticable enough for me to worry about it.

Sounds like your a little low on ATF. Drive it for around 30 miles and then park on a level surface. Shift it into drive/reverse and then put it in neutral and put the brake on and now check the ATF fluid level, I bet it is a little low. If it is check the owners manual for the type fluid you use and add some until it is at the correct level. If in doubt take it to the dealer and have them check it out. Good luck.

Just lube the slip joint, mine has gone away and stayed away for more than 20k miles, I lube it myself every 10k miles. It has worked for most people, so just try it.

Make sure it is lubed, the first few times you lube it, it does come back. However it is softer and eventually it does go away.

You have a 4WD, right?

How do you know when to stop pumping grease into the fittings. I don't want to damage the seals in any way. I heard saying that as soon as you see some grease coming out that's when you should stop. Wouldn't that already brake the seal if the grease is coming out already?

Nope the seals on the slip joint and U joints are made to allow old grease to be pushed out. It is fine to pump grease in the U joints till the old grease comes out, but dont do it with the slip joint. Just pump in grease till you can see the riveshaft slide a littel back. Rather pump in a few times more than too much at one time.

Thanks, yes I have a 4wd.
Just lube both front and back slip joints. Yes the thump might come back, but it does stop after a while or become so soft that you bearly notice it. Mine went away completely and it seems that has been the case for most people after a whiel, if they kept lubing the slip joints regularly.

I marked the components that I should be greasing. How many grease fittings should I be looking for?

I marked the spots where you should lube with red dots. Remember to do both the front and rear shafts. Alo remember to use moly lithium grease for the slip joints and lithium grease for the u joints.

Here is a great write up on a 3rd Gen http://www.4runners.org/articles/zerk/
remember the 4th gen is the same apart from the fact that we dont have the double cardian joint. Also the tyopes of grease specified in the write up is the correct ones. If you can get synthetic grease, especially for the u-joints.

So basically there are three zerks or grease fittings I should be greasing according to your markings. The only thing that is confusing me is the kind of grease. I purchased two sticks of Valvoline DuraBlend DuraBlend which is a NGLI #2 Lithium grease but also fortified with Molydebnum Disulphide. Where can use this grease. I heard a guy at the Toyota tech forum using it for everything with no problems whatsoever. I think it would be better if I put the truck on stands so that I can move the drive shaft.
