I greased the heck out of the slip yoke about 6,000 miles ago, and no thump whatsoever ever since, so so far, greasing it seems to last quite a while. Time will tell how long each greasing will keep the thump at bay.
I'm not concerned about it, since greasing it took care of the issue, but if Toyota wants to do something about it, that's fine too.

For whatever reason, im not getting my hopes up with this possible recall. The amount of $ Toyota would be setting itself up to shell out would be A LOT, so im sure it wont be "new driveshafts for all!". Im still going to get my 03 and 08 the Lexus shafts, regardless of if there's a recall or not. Just my 2 cents.

With the AC on? The compressor in the 4Runner is loud and kind of clunks when it engages. If it's the same compressor, maybe that's what you're feeling/hearing.

Well if this "thump", which I experience all the time, has no kind of detrimental effect on the car, other than just annoyance, why on earth would they recall it?

+1 here. The prop shaft is a well-documented normally scheduled maintenance item. A TSB to explain the benefits of following said schedule makes more sense than a recall.

I guess you didn't notice that your quote was from a poster who apparently wants the tsb and presumably has a reason. The clunk is real and often only briefly cured by lubrication, if at all.
I don't expect you to read the hundreds of posts on the subject but you might take note of the Toyota tech on page 1 who experiences the same phenomenon -- after performing the well-documented scheduled maintenance.
If you don't have the clunk, you should enjoy your good fortune.

I'm new to this gen of 4runner and am wondering what exactly the thump is and what it sounds like. I just got an 05 and have heard a loud POP near the front of the car somewhere while driving twice now... car runs fine and no lights come on. I guess i'm used to seeing dash lights from my passat. same issue or maybe something else?
Same for my 4Runner. Sometimes the clunk disappears for a while and other times, it comes back more frequently.
I was on this early on with the service manager and regional warranty/service manager.
Of course, they all heard and felt the clunk... NORMAL and not covered!
They had the lead mechanic remove the driveshaft and grease everything with 'special' GM grease.
Things got really quiet for a couple of thousand miles... then the clunk returned.
Right now, greased everything a couple months ago... the clunk never went away.
I'll be very happy IF this is a real TSB or recall.

I grease the slip joint and I still get the odd, very mild bump/thump every now and then. It isn't even a fraction as bad as it was but completely getting rid of any bump/thump would be nice.
