If you read the thread you'll see that he has tried that with limited success - like most of us.

Installing the traction bar FIXED the problem completely and permanently.
 
Cool... glad that worked for him. I didn't open the thread to read the story.

But now that I have, is that a hitch shackle being used off-road? Where is Thai when you need him;)
 
That's pretty funny but does anyone think this traction bar would resolve the "clunk".

If Toyota does not extend the Lexus TSB to 4Runners we'll have to come up with something. OR we may go insane...hehehehe

It's not limited to 4Runners. The service director at the dealership said they see it on all Toyota 4x4's -- including his personal Tundra. He was as happy about it as we are. All he does is lube it when needed.
 
It would be nice if someone installed the Lexus TSB parts on a 4Runner to see if they fit and work to solve the problem. So far everyone who has complained has been told to lube the driveshaft (which helps, but doesn't cure the original issue). That, or they were given the runaround about Lexus being a different division with different warranties, hence no carryover for the 4Runner, which uses the same platform and, in theory, should be dealt with the same.
 
Again, does anyone think that a traction bar would resolve this issue as it did on a stock tacoma 4x4?

Lance: You seem to have the most experience with the various suspension products. Any thoughts?

Maybe we don't have to wait for a TSB if the traction bar solution works.
 
This is from a post I made at another site:
"I have been contacting Toyota Customer Care ever since I purchased my 2003 4x4 V-8 4Runner about the vibration and clunking problems. A Toyota Technician has inspected the vehicle and the problems were acknowledged. I had a meeting and test drive with a Toyota Regional Customer Service Manager. That person also acknowledged the problems. In fact that person admitted their Company provided Toyota 2006 4X4 V-8 4Rrunner had the exact same symptoms!
The official answer was they are considered "Normal Operating Characteristics ". The person did not know if Toyota was attempting to resolve the problems in the 4Runner or why attempts were being made to fix the same problems in the Lexus-GX470. It should be noted that the Lexus TSB's have NOT been 100% successful. Some 2006 GX-470's have the same problems.
From the Lexus and Prado TSB's the vibration is a problem of harmonics being generated not one of wheel imbalance. In my vehicle the vibration is present even when the truck is stopped, in drive and foot on the brake.
No idea what is causing the clunking but I have been warned about over lubricating the drive/propeller shaft. I have Toyota do all maintenance for me and believe they are dong and excellent job for me, especially after conversations with them.

Bottom Line: Normal Operating Characteristics will not be corrected until enough dissatisfied owners call Toyota and complain about the problems. Accepting these problems will only reinforce the concept that the customer is willing to accept a lower level of quality while paying more for a vehicle that is perceived of higher quality.

And there we go around the circle again. I bet there are no topics on here that come up as often as this.

Ditto on over-greasing. There was one thread that advocated pumping the shaft full, but then the word came it could be harmful, as the shaft needed the compression room.

The next thing I've been thinking about trying is hitting these grease fittings with Mobile 1 synth grease (which I use for numerous other applications). It's some pretty slippery stuff - unless someone can see why this would be in any way harmful.
 
Other than threads that mention Tacomas expriencing the same clunk, it seems that the cluck is more prominent on the V8 4Runner than V6. Is it true? Some Tacoma owners blame the soft leaf springs and axle wrap, but how do they explain it on a 4R with coils? I haven't noticed the clunk on my '05 Taco or my 4R yet.
 
I haven't noticed any clunking on my 4WD V6, and it just rolled over 10,000 miles this weekend.

I make sure to use the 4WD a few times per month, but I don't use it too often. I am thinking that maybe the use of 2WD results in less axle wrap and, therefore, less clunking than the full-time 4WD V8.:confused:
 
Okay. Somehow we're not getting anywhere. The question for this thread was not to find out if the Lexus TSB fixes the issue. The question is whether there is an alternative solution.

What are we going to do if Toyota does not issue a TSB? Will the traction bar solution that has worked on the Tacoma work on the 4R? Are the driveline components similar and is this even the same issue?

Is there even enough room under the 4runner to fit this traction bar??

My question is...can you buy the Lexus TSB parts from Lexus dealership and have Toyota people (or local mechanic) put it on?? Of course, this is assuming that Toyota won't come around and fix the 4runner clunk.

That is also a good question. I wonder if anyone has tried this.
 
I might be a little off base here, but...

Don't the 4Runners have traction bars? What are those round links connecting the axle to the frame forward of the rear wheel centerline about 16"? Since we have an axle on a coil, we can't depend on leaf springs to transmit wheel thrust to the frame for acceleration/deceleration, so in a sense, aren't those already there??? Maybe those aren't traction bars, in a proper sense??
