Toyota is known to be king of reliability, when properly maintained. I would do spark plugs, wires, clutch since is sounds like yours is about ready to go, and run some fuel injector cleaner. And a oil change.

I ran it in my 93 pickup and the 4runner. So much smoother after. Not sure about power and MPG but it they feel better.

I'm in the Seattle area and we are driving to Maine, Portland area. So I found an 86 4runner in cherry condition cheap!! Hard to find rust free anything where I'm going. Will my 91 be able to tow it? It has a aftermarket hitch w light connections. I'm only running 31's. Is hate to pass it up.

if your not goin too far with it you might survive, but easiest way... got to home depot and rent their truck for an couple hours...

when you say cheap, how much is it really? did you snatch up a photo?
i would rent a haul tow dolly and think you would be fine, use the easiest route through the rockies and take your time hauling up those mountains
get your fluids changed, oil, transmission fluid, transmission fluid filter, and get the differentials changed. check your brakes
It really depends. When we got our 1990 4runner it had only 50-60k on it, but the suspension and drive line mounting rubber/bushings were toast. It was all over on the highway. As a driver,especially at speed, it was mildly challenging or nerve racking.
I went through and rebuilt the suspension and replaced the motor and trans mounts. The urethane sway bar bushings really helped the truck on the on/off ramps, otherwise it was all over on corners.
It really depends on what you can put up with. With a trip on that length, I would want to go through all the systems on the truck. You might also carry an extra EFI relay, as they have a propensity of failing(ie leave you stranded, crank no start, cel) at the worst moments and cost very little.

Normally I am a huge proponent of DIY, but 3200 miles and 2 kids...this is where the trusted mechanic(is there such a thing?) and $100 bucks would come in handy. That would be for a thorough inspection. Or, here's a better tact, take it to a repair shop, tell them you are going on a long trip and you want to see if it needs anything. Guarantee they will find everything and anything that is wrong, going wrong, or is thinking about going wrong.
Funny story, my buddy did that with the local shop a few years ago when he was going on a 1000 mile trip in a 10 yr old hand me down Ford with 200K miles on it. I laughed and said this will be good, $4500 in repair quotes later, I advised him to fix the back brakes for $200 bucks and be done with it. Car wasn't even worth $800.
