driving without a cv axle in?

My cv axle broke yesterday while off roading and I can't get one for a couple days.
So my question is, can I just take my axle out and cover the diff with something and drive like that?

No! From what I understand the axle nut holds wheel bearings together.

One end holds the wheel on, the other keeps the diff from draining its oil. so it would be best not to drive, next best to deal with the noise and change it out as soon as possible

Supposedly you can remove the shaft and leave the inner and outer spindles in place and drive on this indefinitely. I haven't tried this so can't vouch for it.

That is correct, you can separate the CV and just leave the stub in to hold the spindle together

Remember that the CV will be spinning unless you have manual hubs, so don't leave anything floppy on the end.

I carry an empty outer CV joint housing (on the right), just in case I break a inner stub shaft. I have no plans to do the "drill and tap" on the trail, and without manual hubs I still need a way to get the 4Runner home.

Not sure about 4th gen set up, but seems like it would work. I would replace the entire cv axle, unless there wasn’t one available and I had to drive. I’d also probably drive slower, as I’d worry about over stressing other related parts. Just my .02. Perhaps ask over on the 4th gen board

Hacking up CV axles isn't terribly common over there, or anywhere. I did end up slicing my axle shaft off of the hub side. Somehow the shaft came free of the CV joint on the diff side so that's pretty cool actually. 2wd is weird and I don't like it! I bought some from cvj to replace when I get a chance. NEVER BUY CHINESIUM! once the axle broke and I removed it, the weird front end acceleration vibration went away. Turns out, the bearing race had a chunk of itself loose. For reference, it is one solid piece... In theory.

I have maybe a half inch of shaft protruding from the joint. No danger of anything except not remembering you're in two wheel drive in your full time 4x4. Bonus anti theft device: unlock the center diff when you park it. ****ING LIMITED SLIP WON'T ALLOW YOUR TRUCK TO MOVE BECAUSE OF ONE SINGLE WHEEL THAT SLIPPED.
