DRL and Turn Signal Mods.

Did some mod work this weekend. I have had a set of V-Leds Switchback LEDs on backorder for some time now, so it got me to thinking of what else I can do with the DRL and Turn Signals.

Toyota 4Runner DRL Mod
An oldie but a goodie. Just getting around to this as it will come in handy with the switchbacks. A dual throw switch was added so I can have the following functionality:
<li>ON - remain on at all times
<li>OFF - remain off at all times
<li>AUTO - operate as per OEM (on when headlights are off, off when headlight are on)

Toyota 4Runner Blind Spot Monitor Mod
Already had a switch for the "Anytime Backup Camera" Mod, so why not taking advantage of the factory reverse cameras wide angle view and change the aforementioned switch out for one that has double throw capability here too:
<li>ON - activate the reverse camera anytime on demand
<li>OFF - OEM functionality, activate the reverse camera only while in reverse
<li>AUTO - automatically activate the reverse camera anytime a turn signal is used

Nice mods. I always wanted to have a switchback DRL/turn signal so that in DRL mode, it's white and is amber in turn signal mode. However, I couldn't justify to spend $145 on a pair of LED lights. Do you know any other cheaper options?

Expensive indeed, and it is actually more than that as you need a reverse polarity harness for the 4Runner. But no, I have not looked at any other manufacturers for switchbacks as my entire vehicle is using V-Leds products and I like them. I am sure you could find something else cheaper, but when I find a company that has products I like and they are high quality and consistently work, I stick with them. Only thing is that everything I try to order from them is always on backorder.

I am seriously thinking about purchasing the "Override Module" fairly soon (planning on finishing up installing rear camera/voice nav/microphone in the coming weeks), If your pseudo-blind spot module ever becomes available for sale, let us know! :naughty:

Come to think of it, it would be neat to have that bulb light "white" when in DRL mode and "amber" when turn signals are being used. $145? Expensive but very functional. Looks like high quality.

I've read that 4157s are interchangeable with 3157s, which VLeds has. Can anyone confirm?

I believe that you are correct, those two should be interchangeable. V-Leds is now listing the base adapter as such as well...

The led switchbacks have been received and are installed! I really like them. Working on the full write-up now, will post it over the weekend.

I realized that I needed to order 5k parking Leds to match these as well, since the parking lamps were the last remaining amber lights up front and didn't quite look right. The tracking # is showing that they will be here tomorrow, looking forward to them!

Really looking forward to this! I always wanted to do a switchback DRL/turn signal for a long time. Will see if it's worth it to spend $140+ for a set of light.

Here it is. The way I have them set-up I still retain full ON-OFF-AUTO DRL functionality via the DRL Mod Switch I installed earlier this month.

The bulbs themselves are for multi-applications. You have to specify what base adapter you want when ordering. I have the 1156 as well.

In his write up he said the reverse polarity is for 5th gen, 4th gen does not require reverse polarity but he accidentally bought it so he had to reverse the reverse polarity

I really wanted to do this and will pull the trigger once I have enough $$. Thanks for the write up JA. any idea for the 1 second lag between switchback?

4Runner 27 is correct. 2006-2009 4Runners do NOT order the reverse polarity harness. 2010+ need it. In the write up I describe the test that needs to be done to figure out what harness you need for other years.

Here is what you need to order.

<li>V3 System Bulb with Control Box
<li>Add Bulb Base Adapter, 1156 | 1 Pair.
<li>Add Parking Light Adapter for Single Filament Applications, 2 Pin-3 Pin Adapter w/YELLOW Parking Light Wire.

I didnt connect the yellow wire to anything because I have the DRL Mod switch and want to retain that functionality. If you connect the yellow wire then the white DRLs stay lit even with the headlights on, but there is no way then to turn them off.

Anything else, just ask.

any idea for the 1 second lag between switchback?

It takes about a second for the control box to switch over from amber to white. No way around that that i am aware of.

White Parking lights are now installed to match up with the Triton DRLs. VLeds High Power 360° 3.0W 5K White 194 were used, and wow these are bright. Led technology gets better so fast, these are much brighter than my previous parking leds of just a couple years ago.

This is definitely on my TO-DO list. Since I have an '05, I'll have to ask which parking light adapter to use (I'm thinking it the 2-3 Pin adapter W/Yellow Parking light wire). Never liked the "yellow" DRLs on my truck, this is a must have!

The Parking Light Adapter is for Single Filament Applications only. I believe that 2003-2005 4Runners with factory DRLs have a dual filament bulb 4157NA 8W/25W and therefore only need the bulb base adapter. For those 2003-2005 4Runners without factory DRLs (and those who did the DRL mod to add DRLs not factory installed) have 7440A 21W bulbs and therefore looks like they need the 3 Pin Adapter w/RED Parking Light Wire | 1 PAIR. Check with V-Leds to be sure though.

I had amber drl's when I bought the 4r a few months ago. The headlight housings were scratched up so i picked up some new ones. I took all of the lights out of the housing, replaced the housing, and stuck the lights back in their places but now I have no amber drl's! I only get them to turn on when I have the light control knob switched once. Have you ever seen this happen? Is there a ground I'm missing or something?
