DRL and Turn Signal Mods.

[MENTION=15785]J.A.[/MENTION] do you have any pic of just the triton DRL on in the dark and under sunlight? I want to see how bright it is and whether it's visible enough in daylight.

I don't have those shots right now, but will get them for you.

These are very bright, 600lm White, 430lm Amber, White is 50% dimmed when headlights are on. The factory 1156NA bulbs are 302 lumens Amber.

I dont have the vehicle with me at work during the week. So I can get the day pic on thurs (half day hopefully) and the night pic I will try to do tonight.

I had amber drl's when I bought the 4r a few months ago. The headlight housings were scratched up so i picked up some new ones. I took all of the lights out of the housing, replaced the housing, and stuck the lights back in their places but now I have no amber drl's! I only get them to turn on when I have the light control knob switched once. Have you ever seen this happen? Is there a ground I'm missing or something?

wow, your write ups are so easy to follow. I initially looked at your mod and thought it would be beyond my abilities with all of the wiring involved but your write-up makes it look so easy.

Are you sure you are not seeing the parking lights when you turn the control knob once, as opposed to the DRLS? Have you checked to see if you have the DRL relay installed?

Are you sure you are not seeing the parking lights when you turn the control knob once, as opposed to the DRLS? Have you checked to see if you have the DRL relay installed?

When I have the knob switched once I get an amber light at the bottom outside corner of each housing so I'm guessing those are my park lights. The drl's I'm guessing are the same bulb or somewhere very near the turn signals? And I'm not to sure what a drl relay is

Those are the parking lights, the DRLs are just above them and are the turn signals as well.

So just make sure the black connector is plugged into the black box? and is that under the steering wheel by the drivers knees or is that by the fuses in the engine compartment?

The black box is the DRL relay, you only have this if you have the optional DRLs. It is located on the back side of the interior driver side junction box. See this link for how to gain access. Toyota 4Runner DRL Mod

EDIT: I just found a link and I can switch the two relays out. Thanks for the help!

I just pulled the plastic piece down to look and I didn't pull the white fuse box down but I didn't see the black box you mentioned above, or behind the fuse box all I saw in that area was a white box in the same place the black one should be(but smaller than the black one). Since I'm seeing I don't have drl's now is there a way to trick the system into having drl's or is my only hope to do halo's one day?

You just add the DRL relay. Just make sure you get one for your model year as I dont know if they are all the same or not.

The Parking Light Adapter is for Single Filament Applications only. I believe that 2003-2005 4Runners with factory DRLs have a dual filament bulb 4157NA 8W/25W and therefore only need the bulb base adapter. For those 2003-2005 4Runners without factory DRLs (and those who did the DRL mod to add DRLs not factory installed) have 7440A 21W bulbs and therefore looks like they need the 3 Pin Adapter w/RED Parking Light Wire | 1 PAIR. Check with V-Leds to be sure though.

Not sure on the dual filament bulb, I did notice that they only have 1 brightness level. When DRLs are on and when turns signals are activated, it's the same brightness. Also, I don't have a "DRL off" on my turn signal stalk. I'm confused. I've contacted vLeds anyway, don't want to order the wrong adapter (if I even need it).

Hope you get an answer soon, big sale ends tomorrow. What # bulb do you have in there now? How many wire are at the DRL bulb socket? Two or three?

Yes, I saw that huge sale vLeds has now, I haven't tried the coupon code yet as the fine print says "nearly everything" they sell. Didn't think the switchbacks were included.

This mod is way to cool AND functional to pass up.

Do you have the DRL mod done and if not will you be willing to do that? Because if you do that, then I dont believe you would need the parking wire harness. The harness just keeps the DRLs on with the headlights, but if you do the mod, then no need for it.

I ordered the harness not realizing that at the time. But I had to use the harness as they gave me a specific bulb adapter that would not allow for it to be removed. So I used it but did not connect up the third yellow wire.

Having control is very nice, like going stealth if needed. But you need the DRL mod to do so. The switchbacks are very very bright, so being able to turn off if needed is nice. I believe you can add the parking harness kit at a later time if you decide you need it.

According to vLeds: 2005 4RUNNER Limited with DRL (like mine):
No parking light adapter needed UNLESS you want the switchbacks to turn on (white) WHILE the parking lights are on. As you stated, if you do your mod, this adapter is not necessary.

In short: J.A.'s mod is more versatile :thumb:

sidenote: While I do plan on using my multimeter, I know Toyota has the polarity reversed (they were on my headlights causing me to blow fuses when installing my retrofit HIDs) on some of their vehicles, I'll report back on my '05 if that is the case.
