drop in K&N air filter - dropped in already

Bought one off amazon for $46 or so, free shipping, sotp feels much better, revs quicker now. The stock filter had an additional filter (prefilter?) that probably helps keep the airflow cleaner but more restrictive....my wife has something similar on her 07 camry se v6, it too has a K&N drop in filter but it retains the prefilter.

I had a K&N fipk on my 97, that was nice, once the magnaflow cat back is sold, I'll see if people are benefiting more from the cai and the cat back.

Not sure what mileage will do, just came off a trip to Nebraska and back, its averaging 19.6 over 905 miles, so I'll have to check the mileage on the next trip, not expecting much of a gain if any....I'd reset it now but I barely put any miles on it, just a few trips to the gym a week really (3 miles one way) and I don't think that will be an accurate reading. I'll leave the ave mpg alone for now, before the trip, I think it was around 17.7 average. I'll update this post if anyone is interested in the future....

Drop in filter will do little to nothing, definitely not how you are getting a 2mpg increase. IMO I would pull that out and put it back up for sale, grab an AFe dry filter, and not worry about the oil. Again, just IMO. I have never had an issue with an oiled filter myself, but I have had friends that have due to over oiling.

Ill agree, oiled filters are old tech. The new syn media dry filters such as AEM, AFE, Amsoil, Donaldson are better IMO. Better because you dont have to oil them. You dont need a spare while your oiled one is drying out. No MAF or intake tract filth to worry about. And they filter just as well.

If youre happy though then thats all that counts.

Thanks for the replies....sorry, I didn't mean to imply I'm getting a 2mpg increase, that was what I averaged before I put the K&N air filter in, I just put it in yesterday and probably haven't drove 10 miles with it....

What are you guys running in yours? I've thought about the cai but like I said, I'm waiting for the magnaflow cat back to come out to help justify intake/exhaust work....

I've never had a problem with the oiled K&N filters either, been using them for the last 20 years, am kinda sold on them, that's why I bought another, we'll see how it does....

I too have used K&N for 20yrs without a problem, but technology marches on. The advantage of non-oiled filters is that there aren't any vapors from the oil which can, over time, degrade plastic and rubber.

I'm not sure how oil vapors can degrade rubber and plastic, especially in an engine. Main oil seal?- Rubber. Oil fill tube?- Plastic. Both in constant contact with oil, and oil vapors. Hell, even the filter itself has a rubber trim ring, and sits in a plastic housing!

K&N filters have been around so long because they work. Convince me that I'm wrong, or I call BS.

They work, but you can get oil on your MAF if you do not know what you are doing. I, personally, went with the AFe on this truck only because I did not want to deal with the oiling. I have had K&N filters on everything else, including our 2010 Matrix that my wife currently drives. BITOG has a fairly in depth review of the various filter options, and K&N was last in filtration IIRC. Then again, I still use one on one of our vehicles. I prefer the AFe over the K&N any day of the week. As for the degradation of plastics and rubbers, that is ridiculous. If anything, oil will prolong the life of these parts and keep them from dry rotting......in 100 years.....

I use K & N filters on all my cars and always have. I actually have K & N CAI's in my 97 4Runner and my 03 Maxima SE. I definitely noticed a difference with the CIA's.
Being that my 2011 4Runner is new, I just opted for the drop in filter. I do think it improves MPG and the fact that it can be cleaned and reused you don't have to worry about checking it as often. Sure I like to think I'm getting a little more hp out of the motor (4 hp maybe?).
Your going to get a lot of people who don't like the K & N filters because of the oil messing with the MAF. The key is when cleaning the filter and re-oiling it, use the oil sparingly. The mistake many people make is that they use too much oil. The new K & N cleaning kits are much better now because the oil now comes in a spray bottle rather than a squeeze bottle witch imo made people put too much oil on the filter.
