Unless I have an incredible dream overnight with the 4th gen gods telling me to get it, I plan to call the dealer tomorrow and tell them I’m moving on. Just wouldn’t be the best decision right now. I’m looking to buy a house and I figure a truck would better suit me.

Definitely pass and use the money towards a house.

I've never driven a 4th gen and will never want one, don't like how they look.

That said - my other vehicle is a 2004 LX470 and the 2UZ is simply glorious. Buttery smooth and plenty of power, even when hauling around all that extra weight when compared to the 4Runner. Gas mileage be damned.

Yep they really can get going. My 04 with the TRD supercharger is a blast.

3rd vs 4th boils down to what you will be using it for 90% of the time.
Scooting around town or on the trails? I would recommend the 3rd gen.
Loaded down with 4+ passengers for the slopes/trails/road trips? 4th gen.

Our 4th gen has over 180k miles, 3rd has just over 120k miles, they are both well built and have equal (minimal) rattles.

In case anybody is dying to know, I did not buy the 4th. However, by not buying it I saved money to start delving into my 4runner. First thing is figuring out why my driver rear drum seems to be dragging and why it's too hot to touch after just town trips. Leaking axle seals anyone?


Anyway, I just want to thank everyone who provided input on this thread, it was much appreciated!

leaks should be obvious, otherwise stuck e-brake? maladjusted rears, out of round drums? proportioning valve issue? :cowboy:

Stuck adjuster? Remove the drums for a visual inspection.

Check the bell cranks at the back of the drums. They may need to be removed cleaned and lubed.

glad your sticking with the 3rd gen for now.
I love mine, prob one of the best rigs I have owned, and I have owned tons in my 65 years. There are just a few more minor mods I want to make to make it better suited for me and off road I do. Just getting broken in, in 1600 or so miles it will hit 200k
