DT Long Tube, Y, and Gibson Installed

Finally collected all of the pieces for my V8 to get a brand new suspension, Thorley Long Tubes, Y pipe, and Gibson exhaust done. I picked the truck up on Thursday and have put maybe 100 miles on it since.

I am chasing a CEL 0420 and 0430 related, but there are enough posts here I can figure that one out. It’s really interesting how these are built, the upstream and downstream sensors are no more than 4” apart.

I noticed this morning while waiting for the puppy to poop that there is material hanging out of the exhaust tips.

Is there a break in period for headers/exhaust that would cause this? Is it the new gasket burning off excess from the headers? Or is this a sign of something wrong?

Thanks for the input.

If its not packaging material or plastic wrap from around the exhaust tip you didn't remove before installing, its probably muffler packing material.

It was installed packaging free... how much of this stuff should come out of the muffler?

So how does it run with the new headers? do you feel a big difference power wise from stock?
From your picture it looks like your tips were wrapped in plastic.

The material I pulled off looks like insulation, no joke. It’s a fabric/foam type material. Insulation packing makes great sense. I’ve done some reading today across multiple vehicle platforms and a break in makes sense. If it continues I’ll call Gibson and ask.

It’s a huge difference. The goal with this overhaul was to go back to what it would have been off the showroom floor, but with some improvements. My old suspension was so bad chains drug no matter what I towed. My stock 265/60/18’s completely filled the wheel well, no rubbing on pavement but under any articulation it would.

Now, I’m at stock height plus 2” maybe, it feels so solid it’s almost like learning to drive again. Steering is heavy and way more precise. I also got two new CV’s cause my old ones were at the point of gone they came off in pieces.

The exhaust revamp is also quality. It sounds incredible. Cold start it’s a loud BRAAP then a heavy, almost cam’d LS lobe. Once warm, it’s very civilized. Sounds aggressive under hard throttle, calms right down at any cruising speed. 1800-2k is the loudest, but it’s still not a drone, just lets you know it’s there. Butt dyno says 0-45 is way harder of a pull, and any downshift after 60 is slightly faster to 70-80.

I went side outlet to help alleviate the back window down fume overload from the stock system. It’s 70% better, but not gone. All in all, I’m thrilled with the result. My 258k truck feels brand new plus some.
