Dual battery kit 5th gen

Thanks sam, I appreciate it, but I'll be back in cell range next week, so I'll try to give them a call again then. I probably just hit the phones on an off day, or the phone company was doing maintenance or something, who knows. Things from the sandbox are kind of hit and miss sometimes.

This is on my list of to do's. Plus they are local, I'll just stop by and say hi.
:gun6:

Thats what I did while heading back down south cutting through Gilroy. Dropped my wife off at the outlets there and went over to his shop. Pretty cool location and really nice work shop.

Why do all these group buys start after I've already picked something up? I just lost $100 on that damn Grillcraft setup.

I'm probably going to do the dual battery setup eventually. But where are people running the power cables into the cabin? I installed a ham radio in mine and ran the 10 gauge cables through a small tube (had to cut off a small rubber nipple on the engine compartment side) that is part of the big rubber grommet that holds the main wiring harness. It was a tight fit and it took a lot of work to get it through.

There seems to be another rubber grommet that is a bit higher than the wiring harness one, but on the other side, it looks like it would hit the firewall.

On the passenger side, the one grommet looks like it comes out behind the glove box which would block the wires.

Also, how are people running wire under the shifter to the console?

Any suggestions on location would be appreciated!

dunno what to tell ya dude. I'd always planned on getting the kit, but I had to hold off until returning from deployment, cuz of shipping and stuff.

Take the cup holders out, unscrew both shift nobs and pull up from one of the cup holders. The whole unit comes out as one. IF you want to take it all the way out, then you have to unplug some of the wires as well, but you can still lift it up probably 6inches or so without having to unplug the wires

Or... you go down to the West Marine and buy one of these:

Battery Isolator/Combiner

I added one to my boat the other day so that I had the starter on one battery and all the rest of the electrical on the other battery.

$139 plus the cost of a second battery... way better idea. Mount the battery to the left side where that big gap is (looks like a second battery SHOULD go there...)

$800+ is ridiculous.

Two PC1200's $200ea
solenoid $70
Manual switch, some wire and clamps $50
Total $520

Plus I'd rather have Optima yellow top batteries for a dual system. They're cheaper and have more power than the PC1200 batteries.

This looks like a very attractive alternative! Thanks for the post!

Optima with more than 1200 CCA? Please educate me. Does it have the same footprint? Can you fit two of them side by side? Does it have a better warranty and or design life-span? Virgin or recycled lead?

yes you can go cheaper and part out a kit. But some people dont mind spending money for top notch products. For example $400 CAI for some bling under the hood.

The 1200 amps is NOT CCA, it's a marketing gimmick number and useless when comparing batteries. Here is the specs for both the Optima yellow top D34/78 and the Odyssey PC1200 (taken from each manufactures technical specs.)

Optima/Odyssey
CCA 750/550
CA 870/725
Res. Capacity 55/44
Reserve min. 120/78
Weight 43.5/38
Volume cu. in. 537/381

The Optima Red top has even better starting specs but for dual battery systems the Yellow top makes more sense.

As to reliability and size, I've had an Optima sitting in the garage that after almost 2yrs still had almost 12V and when installed, started the car like brand new. Of course the Odyssey is small, it doesn't have the power of the Optima.

In short, using Optima yellow tops I can have a better (more power, just as reliable) dual battery system at nearly half the cost of the Kodiak which is charging you extra for nothing.
Give me a Optima any day over Odyssey and their gimmick numbers .

Thanks for your opinion. Why don't you start a thread on you proposed setup instead of posting in here since you obviously don't like it.
