"Dude, there's a hole in your floor."

Title says it all. Was looking to remedy the "Dude, your truck smells like sh*t." issue by removing the nasty carpet and seats. We had the back seats out, and just finished tearing the carpet out and found this on the drivers side back seat deck.

So... 1) What hack job home remedy/mod would cause this to be here? 2) What is the black piece in the cabin that is somewhat over the hole, but has wires running out of it?

somebody changed a fuel pump the "easy" way. cut a hole in the floor to expose the top of the fuel tank. if i'm not mistaken thats the send for the fuel guage.

Power and fuel gauge wires for the fuel pump. The way to fix it is to weld it up and grind to smooth

Maybe add an easy access hatch...my 97 eldorado had one, my 96 did not. Guess witch one I had to drop the tank to fix the fuel pump.

At one point I considered such a modification to avoid dropping the recently topped off tank to replace a dead pump. I couldn't bring myself to commit such an act of barbarism and did it the right way. I know my 4Runner will never see the Barrett Jackson auction, but I just could not hack something decent up.

I really like the nice, sharp edges they left all around it, I usually can't find enough things to cut my arms/hands on! No offense OP, couldn't resist that they just used a tin snip to do this. I've done the same but only on speaker installs and I cover up the sharp edges. EZ fix for you though. :banana:

1.) Looks like you got your answer.
2.) Sorry, don't know what the wired up black thing is. Possibly a low profile way to get wires through the floor? Carefully reach in and see if they come through?

I did want to mention that this is a place where a deck-plate mod would be 100% useful. Would have been nice if the PO had cut a round hole instead of getting all jiggy with the tin snips, but if you are going to weld something in I'd leave access.

Seriously. I was up front taking the bolts out of the passenger seat and I heard what sounded like a handful of miscellaneous hardware being dropped into a metal can then spreading around, or throwing a box of screws down metal steps. My buddy in the back putting the trim back in had dropped all of the screws into this hole, and they all made their way to the most vein cutting, hand severing, tetanus giving reaches of the abyss. Thank god for extendable magnets.

Which probably explains why the tank leaks past 3/4 full and the fuel gauge does not work. Joy of joys.

Yeah!

No open flames around the gas tank!
Cut a metal and use self tapping screws to tight it to the floor. Then use jb weld to cover tiny holes. Some one used it to replace the fuel pump and probably used a cheap part. You many need this opening to get a good fuel pump installed on a later day.
