Dumb front bumper question

Looking to put an ARB (or something like it) front bumper on my 2014 trail. Been following different threads and it sounds like the ARB goes over the current bumper, is that correct?

Being a former Jeep guy, I took off the stock bumper and replaced it with a heavy duty winch bumper. Planning on doing something similar with my Trail but it Doesn't look like that would be very easy with the Trail.

None of the currently available front bumpers goes over the bumper skin, but to the best of my knowledge, they all go over the existing bumper bar (i.e. the big metal bar behind the bumper skin).

However, some bits and pieces of the original bumper skin are retained and need to be reinstalled, so you are cutting up the original bumper skin.

the Shrockworks rear bumper appears to go over the original bumper skin, but someone who actually installed one will have to confirm that. all other rear bumpers require trimming of the OEM rear bumper skin.

Lots of guys do it themselves and it takes a while and then others pay to have it done. Could be an option if you want to mount it up. Find a reputable shop that knows Toyotas well and ask how much it would cost to have installed.

Sounds like a plan. Bumper is number 3 on my list, nerd bar, then gobi rack, then front bumper. Sometime down the road I would like to do a swing out back bumper.

Getting ready for a circumnavigate of the country in the next 18-24 months.

just as an fyi, I design all of my bumpers so that a person can go back to stock anytime they wish. We dont make it so you have to cut any of your existing OEM plastic up, except maybe the fender liners.

To your question though, these installs usually dont take a rocket scientist. Anyone with a driveway, some hand tools and just a small amount of mechanical skill should be able to install any front bumper within a couple of hours. Hell, I think I've installed so many GX470 bumpers that I could do it in 35 minutes start to finish.

Also, I do believe most companies remove the oem crossmember and the bumper itself becomes the new "cross member". Otherwise there'd be no room for the winch, and also no where to bolt up the new bumper.

The shrockworks bumper took me just under 6 hours to install, but I did it by myself with the exception of a little help to lift it in place. The weather also dropped down to about 35 degrees half way through and progress slowed.
You do remove the bumper bar behind the stock cover. I heard the ARB is a little easier to install.
the SW bumper is great apart from the headlight trim solution...I had read the trim pieces were a little goofy, I gotta be honest, they are a horrible glaring afterthought on an otherwise remarkable piece of craftsmanship.

Looked at the your site. Does the rack fit the 2014 Trail?

I would highly recommend you check out [MENTION=68079]drabbits[/MENTION] and Camelbak Metal Gear before you pull the trigger on that Gobi. I saved about half the cost of Gobi AND I think it is a better rack.

Like the Rack

Looks like a Gobi ladder on the back. How does the Gobi and the Camelback compare in quality, any idea? The camelback is less expensive but with Gobi's current offer of a free ladder, shipping and wind deflector there is not that much difference.
