Duratracs, how I love thee

The stock 20" rims and tires on the Limited really are an insult to this vehicle.

I've been driving with the stock wheels and tires the last six months and totally forgot what these things were like. I had the local Toyota dealer finally balance my Duratracs properly on FJ Cruiser Steel Wheels (Discount Tire did a crapolla job last year) - what a difference. If I didn't know better, I'd think I had a different suspension. The body roll is gone, no more nose dive. I can take snowy corners at speed and the 4runner stays flat. So awesome!

Also enjoying my duratracs . I've only 400 miles on them so far, but am very pleased with the handling. Along with my icon coil overs I seem to have excellent handling and stability and I also don't seem to experience the infamous " nosedive" I hear about when braking.

just asking.... could you explain how the tires corrected your nose dive issue?

I echo this.

How so did changing tires cure the nose dive and cornering?

I noticed a difference not when I changed my tires but after I changed my shocks and springs.

I don't know how, but it is a very dramatic difference cornering. Feels far more planted and much safer. I'm guessing it has something to do with being wider high-quality E-Rated truck tires vs. cheap passengers.

I'm not sure why it is helping with nose dive. Mind you, I'm not saying it is completely gone and it wasn't nearly as dramatic a change as with cornering, but it definitely seemed to help.

I have the tires listed below. I run them at 40 to 45lbs depending on load. IMHO, and this is only my opinion, yes they helped some re nose dive. To me, the nose dive was NOT a big issue with the OEM tires. (Im getting older, I brake sooner and more slowly I guess....) Everybody else who says shocks, springs will help more, spot on. Where my tires helped the most, again IMHO, was with body roll, over-steer/under-steer type movements.

Gotcha.

Last month I swapped my Yokos with Nitto Terra Grappler's and like you - significant difference. Amazing what a difference tires can make.

I haven't experienced any (noticeable) nose dive issues w/ my LE.

how are you guys liking the wear on the Duratrac under the 5th gen? How many miles have been put on them?

Where i am coming from-
I have a 5th gen with a stage 5 ICON lift and 18"wheels that needs a set of tires that will be great in the snow/dirt trails AND great on the highway MPG. Planning on sticking with a tire between 32-33" dia.

I have Duratracs on my '10 TUNDRA CREWMAX. They ARE GREAT in the snow/ice and a great riding tire- BUT have worn exceptionally fast. I got about 20K miles out of them before they have become too fragile to take out on any seriously rocky terrain like Death Valley dirt roads. I am getting puncture flats thru the treads now. Easy trail fix, but no confidence in a tire at 20k is not what i am looking for under the runner. Maybe they just dont do good under a heavier vehicle?

How are everyones doing under the 5th gen runner?

Range C or Range E on your Tundra?

I just picked up 295/65/18's (Range E) for my 4th gen and hoping I get lots of mileage out of them.

I have said this before on other threads last year etc. and I got a bit of ribbing for it, but I too felt a noticeable difference in "nose dive" just by changing out my OEM for the tires as listed below. Happy to get some others confirming my findings.....finally! Be safe and have a Happy New Years.

Mine have 27k on them, the PO had them installed when the truck was just a few hundred miles old. Not sure the load rating, but they are the factory size (265/70-17). While they clearly have less tread than new, they still have plenty of life left in them and perform wonderfully on all terrain that I have had them on, including some extremely rocky, loose, steep inclines

good to hear!
and i should add-
the Duratracs on my tundra were rotated every 3-4k and all wore evenly. I carry a slide-in camper regularly so alot of weight in the bed.

this is actually my second set. first set rode under my '96 taco and were an unbelievable tire (load c) with great wear up to 30k. But a lighter vehicle. Hence why i bought the set for the Tundra.

So is the "C" and "E" distinction a load rating then and under normal usage not towing or anything would "C" be fine?
Also, does one load rating wear any better than the other?

The C is lighter. I have run Cs on my 3rd gen for years without issues. I wheel and tow. I have beat the heck out of them offroad and they hold up great. (Yokohama A/T-S)

Sounds good. Thanks for the quick response. I love the way the 4R handles with them on. Since I had them put on at day one tho I have nothing to compare them to and the test drives did not involve any off road. I'm thinking I made the right choice and am happy with them.

I have 16,000 miles on mine and still going strong (rotate them every 4 to 5 thousand miles).
