Dusty's Custom Cargo Drawers: Version 2.0

Just to be clear...
I am not building new sets of drawers and selling those.
I am not custom making these for people with their designs.
I AM selling the one and only set of these drawers that I have. The set that I AM selling is the set that is pictured above that has been in my 4Runner (off and on) for the last few years.

Thanks for all the interest guys, but I just don't have the time to custom design a set of drawers for everyone on there that likes this setup.

how many sheets of MDF/ply??

What d'ya know. I was just thinking about Dusty's drawers (haha) a little while ago and viola, it's back at the top of the threads..

Something I just thought of, can't remember if I asked before.... Dusty, do you know about how may sheets of material this takes? I'm gonna guess 2 just off the hip. I think I'm gonna try 1/2" ply, that MDF has to weigh a ton...

Hey Bob,
I wouldn't use 1/2" for anything other than the cross sections that you can rabbett or dado into 3/4"material... The 1/2 will just be too pliable. You could probably get away with using 1/2 for the top & bottom as well, but I'd be sure to use 3/4 for the sides of both drawers, and the shell...
To answer your specific question, I think I used (1) 4'x8' sheet of both 1/2" & 3/4" MDF and had plenty left over if memory serves.

EDIT: Another note to consider is that 1/2" really won't give the fasteners much "meat" to grab on to. In the long run, this will affect the overall durability. Now, if you're going to use legitimate joinery, such as dove tails, finger joints, mortise & tenon, etc. or pocket screws, you probably don't have to worry as much about the fasteners, but MDF is not the best material for actual joinery...

Beautiful work,.. would have bought these months ago, when I was working in STL and commuting every week from Virginia.. for 7 years. Good luck to whomever bought these! But,.. if still available.. let me know!

Inspired

Welp, this has changed my thought on the cargo shelf is dumb. Perfect incorporation and after I build this my tools and cables will not longer be sliding around.

I am a new 4R owner and I love it, but was looking for some more storage space as well! I found your post and loved it so i took on the project.

I used your same concepts of hinged front top, rear cubby, and sliding drawers. I used the piano hinge instead of the multiple, and added some magnetic closures (nametag magnets) to keep it from rattling and secured them with some wood glue. Used the 20'' drawer sliders too. Loving it so far, bought some Rockler Drawer Divider Holders to run some plywood across the drawer sections to keep things tight.

Wood is 3/4'' pine and 1/2'' pine, used some wood glue and self-tapping wood screws (pre-drilled everything).

Thanks again for the inspiration and mine definitely isn't up to specs but was my first wood project and am excited for it's capabilities.
