Should be good - looks like it's type A. I like the SD slot too.

It looks like I can probably do even better and get it without the drive for $90 and get my own.

I know my daughters new galaxy S5 has the new usb 3 micro b connector. the big connector mirrors the old usb micro and that's how you would connect it to a legacy port, but you lose the charging ability since the new usb 3 connector has 2 connectors, big one is data, the small one is power if I remember correctly.

I figure I could use a WD Red 3TB internally and get 1 or 2 externals. I know the portable Seagates use the type A 3.0 and I think the desktop externals include adapters that include type A as well.

start small and see how that works. once you get the hang of it worry about upgrading/adding on later.

trust me, the money outlay can get crazy if your not careful and start small. you may end up not going past what you started with.

I know I learned the hard way on money outlay, but I was able to recycle a lot of my mistakes and refine the process over the years on the home server.

I have been debating for the last year on going with a NAS for the hassle free route or to use drive bender to mimic my current windows home server v1 to a newer os (win 7) with the same functionality of my old outdated whs v1.

but unless my current outdated whs v1 main hdd dies, I wont be migrating just yet.

Agree. I'm just stoked I can get a decent dual band gig router and a 3GB NAS for around $218 shipped. A couple of externals might bring this project to the $450 mark, but since that includes the router it seems like the best option so far.

Good.. maybe that means all the kinks are worked out and it's stable. I didn't see a newer version anywhere. The specs still seem relevant. Any specific concerns?

the last firmware update was in july-2013 (Firmware Version 1.0.0.52)

they did update the firmware to support win 8 (Firmware Version 1.0.0.34 (Supports Win8))

Heh.. I'm still rocking a 2008 Macbook Pro as my go-to machine. If it works and is still relevant, I'm good with it. :biggrin1:
