E-Locker Swap

Hey Dudes,
infamousRNR(aka Sean) and I collaborated with krutoydiesel (aka Seydzh) to make Y'all an E-locker Swap Video. Seydzh was the brains behind this operation and I (Timmy) was just along for the ride to help where I could and film the job. Seydzh also had his brother Steven along to help wrench. Steven also owns a 3rd Gen. Sean worked his usual magic and made the video much more viewable after I did all the rough cuts to get the right content and flow.

Without further ado, Here's the Video and Enjoy the Show!

Tim, thanks again for your assistance and garage/tools. It was a ton of fun and lots of learning.

I wanted to make a mention to 4x4mike as his original thread http://www.ultimateyota.com/showthread.php?8389-4x4mike-s-e-locker-retrofit helped me pinpoint the exact location at the back of the speedo as well as wrap my head around some of the wiring configurations possible.

This wouldn't have worked here because they took the axles out, but I just put the wheels back on when nearly done removing it and lowered it back down. Then rolled it out from underneath no problem.

That's a great idea.

Actually viewing this now ... Question could u not have just pulled the 3rd member and swamped them without removing the entire rear-end assembly

Like rich dog said, you would have to alter the axle housing to make it fit. It's fairly involved. It's much easier to just get the whole axle housing.

Rolled the old axle out^ and used my spare plus stole my husband's spare as well to roll the new axle into place. It was a one-woman job.

This option would be what we would've done, if we didn't want to use my axle shafts into the elocked axle.

Makes complete sense and you had more people to boot.

I swapped shafts after I got the 'new' axle in, you know how easy they are to pull and I had to change the spares out anyway.

Just in case you or anyone with any 8" diff wants to do a 3rd member 3rd gen elocker swap:
http://sonoransteel.com/phong/retrofit_electric_locker.html

I almost went this route in my 2nd gen since axle housing are so different. Went with TruTrac limited slip instead and that was a great option as well for me. 3rd genner have so many options, makes me very jealous.

Thanks for the info I am actually thinking about running dual Detroit locker... But quite haven't figured out the front yet.

Yeah a lot of guys love the full locker. Just depends on usage. I'm like 15-20% off road so I didn't go full time locker. The Detroit Trutrac gives you a very high lock-ability like 90% or something when engaging and requires no clutches or special fluid. It's just based on gear types and such. Pretty neat device. Works like an open diff when on road, and automatically "locks" both wheels together when one slips off road. There's a guy on here I think crazydubman that has a TruTrac in his front diff and he's very fond of it. So that's an option if you can't figure out a front locker.

There's also aftermarket electric lockers that require little to no axle housing modifications. Harrop makes them from Australia I think but they're crazy expensive. Like $1200 USD

krutoydiesel what next for your rig.

Well now that I got the e-locker in, I moved up the sway bar because it was hitting the elocker actuator housing. I used Sonoran Steels kit.

Next is to fab up a rear bumper and get a winch for my front bumper. July is the month for the rear bumper and August will be the winch, I have a feeling my wife is getting me a winch(I've been dropping such obvious hints that if a winch hit me in the face on my birthday I wouldn't be surprised).

My build thread is in my signature =)

Great job on the video and the work. Man it's been a long time since I did that swap but remember how fun and rewarding it was. Not to mention the added offroad benefit.

Back when I did the swap there wasn't a ton of information on the details. There were companies that sold wiring harnesses but they were universal kits and since I was putting this into a vehicle that came this way from the factory I wanted to stick to factory components. Being able to push that button in a sticky spot off road was a blessing. I'm in a 4th gen now and will miss a locker.

I had the same thought and wanted to bring the same function back, hopefully the video helps people on their way to getting an elocker in and wired properly with the OEM function.

thanks again!

Hey Mike, you should try to make it to our next party. If you subscribe to our channel, we'll post a video for a party invite. We'll most likely have a party in September or October.
